The man lighting a cigarette asked. "It's done, Agent Mulder is going crazy. I injected him with the substance you gave me." The Smoking Man nodded. Fowley had no idea what exactly she had injected Fox Mulder with but she knew it would cause him to go crazy, screaming about voices in his head. As the substance dies down, the voices in his head will grow quieter but that would take a few days. These 'voices' were really the thoughts of people around him. They knew the doctors would be monitoring him as much as possible. The Smoking Man didn't tell Fowley that Mulder could end up with brain damage or even amnesia. He believed she wouldn't have gone through with it if he had told her. "Where's Agent Scully?" he asked. "I don't know, she left in hurry making certain that only her mother be allowed in to see Fox. For some reason she won't even let A.D. Skinner see him." Georgetown Memorial Hospital Special Pyschiatry Unit Washington D.C. 11:21 am "I'd like to see Fox Mulder, my name is Margaret Scully." "Yes, Mrs. Scully, Dana told us to let only you in to see Mr. Mulder," the nurse, who was named Jenna, said. "I've been helping to take care of him." Margaret nodded. "My daughter wasn't able to tell me much about his condition..." "When Mr. Mulder was brought in, he was disoriented and in a lot of pain. He was also screaming about voices in his head. The woman that brought him here said something about LSD but we haven't found any traces of that. We did, however, find an unknown drug in his system. We can't figure out what it is but it was apparently injected." "Oh my goodness!" Maggie said. Jenna led her into Mulder's room. "Is he unconscious?" "Yes. The doctor had him brought into this room and restrained after he collapsed. Let me get him, he can answer any questions you have much better than I can." Maggie took Mulder's hand when Jenna left to get the doctor. "Fox, Fox, it's Maggie. Can you hear me?" She brushed a lock of hair from his forehead and debated whether or not to call his mother. Dana had told her about the fight they had but this was serious. "Mrs. Scully?" She jumped and turned to face the doctor. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," he said holding his hand out. "I'm Doctor Madison. Dana told me to expect you." Maggie waited for him to tell her Mulder's condition. "Agent Mulder had been drugged with an unknown substance. This is what is causing him to hear things in his head. Since we don't know what the drug is, we won't be able to give him an antidote. We'll have to wait until it leaves his system." Mrs. Scully was almost afraid to ask. "Is that all?" "I'm afraid not. The headaches have also caused some swelling." Maggie gasped and Doctor Madison put his hand on her shoulder. "We brought the swelling down but there is possbility of amnesia or even brain damage." Washington D.C. International Airport Dana Scully grabbed her suitcase and ran to the exit. She was eager to see how her partner was doing. She needed to somehow tell him what she saw. Scully still couldn't believe it. Luckily she had taken her camera! She decided to take the film to the Lone Gunmen so she wouldn't lose it. Any camera they had ended up stripped of its film or destroyed. Offices of the Lone Gunmen "Scully? Hello, Scully?" "What? Oh, I'm sorry, Frohike." She had been thinking about Mulder. When she told her mom she'd be back soon, Maggie had told her Mulder's condition. "I was just thinking about Mulder," she said sadly. "How is he?" Byers asked. Scully had forgotten to tell them about their friend. She explained everything up to the fact that Fowley had brought him in and said he was high on LSD. "You think she doped him up with something, don't you?" Langly asked. Scully's answer was a nod. Georgetown Memorial Hospital Special Pyschiatric Unit Washington D.C. Scully entered Mulder's room. She nearly winced when she saw him, tears swelling in her eyes. She turned when she felt a hand on her shoulder. "Hi, Mom." "Hi, sweetheart. Did everything go alright?" Scully smiled sadly and nodded. "Mom, remember that woman, Diana Fowley?" "Yes dear, in fact, she's here trying to see Fox. Doctor Madison isn't letting her up, though. Not until you give the okay." "That bitch!" "Dana!" Maggie scolded, appalled by her daughter's language. "Why on Earth would you call her that?" "Mom, she's responsible for Mulder's condition! She drugged him!" Scully shouted. "Where is she?" Maggie had never seen her daughter so distraught, well, maybe once when Scully thought Mulder had turned against her. "Down the hall, in the waiting room. Why?" Scully didn't answer but headed down the hall. Maggie took a quick look at Mulder and followed her daughter. Fowely didn't look up from the magazine she was reading until Scully was two feet in front of her. "Agent Scully," she said politely. "Why did you do it?" Scully asked. "Do what?" "You know what I'm talking about. Why did you drug Mulder?" Fowley's face blanched. *She knew? How?* "Agent Scully, I have no idea what you're talking about," she lied. "Oh, sure, and I believe in the Easter bunny!" Scully answered sarcastically and grabbed her by the arm. "Diana Fowley, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Special Agent Fox Mulder." "Excuse me?" she asked. "Agent Scully," a stern voice said. It was Skinner. "What's going on, why are you arresting Agent Fowley?" "She tried to kill Mulder, sir!" "Do you have proof of that?" "Well, no, but I just know it was her!" "That's very circumstantial, Agent," he replied. "We should wait until Mulder wakes up. Hopefully he can clear this all up." Skinner regarded her, confused. "Hopefully? What are you talking about? Did I miss something?" Maggie, who had been standing in the doorway, spoke up. "Fox may have amensia or even brain damage when he awakens." "What??" Now Fowley was shocked and sank onto the chair to keep her legs from buckling underneath. "I- I- didn't know, he didn't tell me. That bastard didn't tell me that!" she screamed, holding back her tears. "Agent Fowley, calm down. Are you saying you did drug Mulder?" Skinner asked. "Yes, I did! But I didn't know what I drugged him with! The man just gave me something and told me to inject Fox with it. He told me it was harmless, that it would help rid the voices in his head. I just wanted him to get better." Maggie and Skinner looked at one another confused, but Scully understood. "This man wanted to take Mulder's supposed ability to read minds. Mulder would either forget everything that happened or not be able to do anything at all, he'd have to quit the Bureau. Fowley, who is this man?" "I don't know his name. He's tall, in his 60s, and smokes a lot. I think he smokes Morley's." Scully looked at Skinner. The Cancer Man! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Georgetown Memorial Hospital 2 days later Scully spent the last two days at Mulder's bedside. She did, however, leave once at the request of her mother. She had showered and changed arriving back at the hospital as Mulder was coming to. "Dana! Fox is waking up!" Maggie said excitedly. When Scully entered the room she smiled at him. "It's about time you woke up, Mulder." she teased. He smiled back at her. A few minutes later his smile faded. **Fowley is working for the Cancer Man. How can I tell Mulder? Will he remember what happened before he got to the hospital?** "Mulder, what's wrong? Are you in pain?" "No, Scully, I can only hear you, and your thoughts are quiet. Fowley is working for the Cancer Man." "How did you know?" she asked, stunned. "I remember her at my apartment. My head was pounding because I couldn't tune all the extra voices out. I noticed the needle before she injected me and I could hear her debating in her head. Unfortunately, she was the last thing I saw before I passed out. Oh, I can read your mind. Did you figure that out?" "You read my mind." "Yeah, but I can't read your deep dark secrets, not anymore. Just what's on the tip of your brain." Maggie entered the room. "Fox," she said walking over to him. "I'm so glad you're awake!" "Hi, Mrs. Scully." "No memory loss?" she asked. "None whatsoever," he answered. Doctor Madison cleared his throat when he came in. "That may not be the case in the future, Agent Mulder." "What do you mean?" he asked confused. "The drug doesn't seem to be the cause of your headaches, just increased their intensity. I'm afraid you may be looking at a relapse because it's not entirely out of your system." Mulder closed his eyes for a moment and then opened them to look at Scully. She nodded, he wanted her to ask the doctor some questions. "How long will it take to leave his system?" "We can't tell at this point, maybe three weeks. It's a very potent substance." "What's the chance of a relapse?" "60 percent chance, Dana, and it my be worse than what he experienced before. For now, he'll be able to continue working but if something happens... Agent Mulder, why don't you get some rest." He nodded and the doctor left. The two agents looked at Maggie Scully. "Mom, are you alright?" Scully asked. "Oh yes, dear, I was just thinking." Mulder accidentally picked up her thought. Not that he could help it. **They love each other so much, why don't they realize it.** FBI Headquarters X-Files Office Five Weeks Later Mulder had been feeling great within the past five weeks. No headaches at all. He still heard voices but only when he concentrated really hard. He and Scully and been working on a case in Wisconsin last week and he told her what her theory was... before she got a chance to open her mouth. She glared at him and stormed off. Mulder told her he was sorry but it wasn't as if he could help it. Well, okay, he could but he was just having some fun. But, he didn't want this ability, he hated it. He hated reading people's minds and most of all, he hated being ignored by Scully. She had been in the FBI research library doing paperwork there, away from him. She wouldn't let Mulder visit her on the weekends and she wouldn't visit him. He had a horrible feeling that he was losing her slowly. A.D. Skinner's Office "Excuse me, sir? Agent Mulder has dropped the charges against Fowley?" Scully asked stunned. "I'm afraid so. Although, the reason is just a rumor. I have no idea if it's true." "What do you mean, sir?" "I don't know if you know, but Diana Fowley is Mulder's ex-wife." Skinner saw her emotions changing from disbelief to hurt in two seconds. *Why hadn't he ever told me? That was why he was so willing to trust her!* X-Files Office It was happening again. He thought the drug was of his system, it was supposed to be. He knew as soon as he felt dizzy his life was going to change. He need Scully. Mulder picked up the phone, surprised by the weight of it. He dialed her number. "Scully." "Scully," he gasped. "Mulder? What's wrong? Are you okay?" "My head, it hurts," he answered before he collapsed. When Scully hung up the phone, she ran to the elevator. *Damn!* The stupid thing was taking forever so she ran to the stairwell. Mulder opened his eyes. He had no idea where he was or what happened. All he knew was that his head was pounding. He managed to get up off the floor to look around. This place seemed so familiar to him, but why? Looking at his desk, he saw a name, Fox Mulder. He walked to the wall and touched the "I Want to Believe" poster, tracing the letters. *Why can't I remember anything?* "Mulder, what happened?" Scully asked. She saw him facing his poster. *Thank God he's alright* She walked over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Mulder?" He looked at her, confused. "I- who are you?" XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX X-Files Office *God, no!* "Mulder, I'm your partner, Dana Scully. Do you remember me? Anything?" "Where's Samantha?" he asked with pain in his eyes. It was the same kind of pain that he had when he talked about his little sister. He continued, "He took her! He killed her! But...but no one ever found her." Mulder was shaking now and Scully heard the one word she thought she'd never hear from him again. "Scully...Scully, I remember what really happened to Samantha!" "Here, sit down, Mulder." Scully told him. "Do you want to talk about it?" He nodded slowly, pulling himself together. He had always thought Samantha had been abducted by aliens or even the government but neither happened. "On the night I thought she was taken, I was too. I later learned that the three men had killed her. I don't know the reason though. When I came to, I was on my couch, my mom sitting next to me. She asked me where Samantha was but I didn't know, I couldn't remember." Mulder sighed. "My...my dad grabbed me by my shirt collar and said I was playing dumb and that I should know where Samantha was. He said...he said I let them take her away! I felt a tear slide down my cheek and I knew I was in more trouble than before. See, men don't cry in my family." Mulder left out the part when his father threw him across the floor, he didn't want Scully to feel too sorry for him. "Eventually, I knew my father was just acting that way because he was upset and he missed Samantha terribly." Scully's Apartment Three Hours Later Scully drove Mulder back to her apartment. There was no way she was going to leave him alone tonight! He hadn't spoken a word since he told her about Samantha. She never expected it. Scully called Skinner and told him Mulder wasn't feeling well. He sent them both home because he agreed that Mulder should be watched. Scully watched Mulder sink onto her couch and asked him if he wanted any tea. "Scully." "Yeah, Mulder?" He looked at her for the first time since they had left the Bureau. "I have to talk to mom but I don't know how to tell her. What if she has another stroke? I-I can't lose her too!" Scully nodded in understanding. A few years ago, they thought Samantha had come back but it had been what Mulder called a clone. This clone fell of a bridge and Mulder had a hard time telling his father. He knew it would be even harder telling this to his mom. Teena Mulder's Home "Fox?" she said when she opened the door. She obviously wasn't expecting to see her son ever again. "Ms. Scully, come in. What can I help you with today?" she asked as though they were strangers. Scully couldn't believe she was still holding a grudge against Mulder from the time he had undergone the uncoventional treatment to remember his past. She looked at her partner. He was visibly shaken and pale. "Mulder, why don't you go to the bathroom and relax for a bit." He nodded and slowly headed to the bathroom. "What's going on?" Teena demanded. "Mrs. Mulder, your son had remembered what happened the night Samantha disappeared." "What? No, he couldn't possibly remember! She's not dead, if that's what he remembered! She's just missing! If she's dead then I don't want to know!" "Why not?" Scully asked. "Because she's coming back, I have to believe that!" "She's not, Mom." Mulder said. "Samantha was...she was...was killed, Mom. I tried to convince them to leave Samantha but they didn't listen." "STOP, FOX! She's not dead!!!" Teena said covering her ears. Scully could see the tears in Mulder's eyes as he went to his mom. He pulled her into his arms. "Mom, I'm sorry, it's all my fault." Scully watched Teena Mulder do the most unimaginable thing for any mother to do. She pushed her son away. After a minute of confusion for Mulder, she slapped him across the face. "Fox William Mulder, I never want to see or speak to you again! NOW LEAVE!" With that, she stormed upstairs. Scully was in as much shock as Mulder was. What the hell happened? None of that was his fault! She followed Mulder out of the house. When she got to the car, she saw him sway. "Mulder!" He was having trouble breathing. Putting a hand on his shoulder, she said, "Breath, Mulder, come on, you can do it." "Scully...she didn't...didn't just say that? Did she?" "I'm afraid she did, Mulder." "Scully, my head hurts again. I think--" Before he could finish, a blinding flash of pain hit him and he bent over grabbing his head. "Mulder!" Scully pulled out her cell phone to dial 911. "Scully don't, I'm fine." Mulder gasped. "Bullshit!" "Alright, alright, but I'm sure you could drive me." She nodded and helped him into the car. Before going to the driver's side, she checked his pulse, it was racing. "Just lay your head back and relax, you'll be fine." At least, she hoped he would be. *What would I have done if he never remembered me?* Her heart had nearly stopped when he asked her who she was. *God, please help him he's been through so much* XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Georgetown Memorial Hospital Three Days Later "Doctor Madison says you can leave tomorrow." Scully told Mulder. "Good, I can't wait. What did he say about the brain damage thing?" "He's not sure about it but remember, he said 60 percent chance. But, the drug is out of your system maybe everything's under control." Mulder sighed. "I can't believe my mom doesn't want to see my anymore." They sat in silence for five minutes. Scully decided that she couldn't wait any longer to ask him. "Mulder, why didn't you tell me you weren't pressing charges against Fowley?" "Because I new you'd be upset when you found out." Scully rolled her eyes. "That's not a reason, Mulder, she tried to kill you!" "No, she didn't, Scully, that drug wasn't meant to kill me, just make me unable to read minds." "Well, that plan didn't work," she said. "Yes it did, I can't do it anymore. I have no idea what you're thinking." "Good because I don't want you to tell me your theories!" Mulder smiled, but before he could joke about it she hit him with something else. "Why didn't you tell me you were married to her?" His smile faded, that was one thing he didn't want to talk about. "Fine, Scully, you want to know, I'll tell you!" Scully sat in the uncomfortable chair and raised her eyebrows. "We met in 1989 when I was working in the Behavioral Science Unit. Reggie Purdue assigned her as my temporary partner. When we were on a stakeout, we talked about the paranormal, UFOs, governmental conspiracies. She was the one to convince me there was more out there than they were telling us, along with the Gunmen. I believed her so I did the only thing I could think of at the time." Scully looked at him. "Which was?" "I married her. One month later we were in the basement, in what's now our office, searching for something, we found the X-Files. Eventually, we convinced them to open a division. After a year, Diana got bored. I, as you can tell, I did not. One day I arrived home to a letter that said she asked to be reassigned and I noticed there were divorce papers as well. I was so confused, all the while thinking I had done something wrong. I reluctantly signed the papers. It was official, my wife and partner were gone for good. I hadn't seen her until that chess player was killed." "I'm sorry I got upset that you didn't tell me." "It's okay Scully. Besides, I should have told you when she came back." A nurse popped her head in. "Visiting hours are just about over," she said. Scully grabbed her coat. "I'll be at the Comfort Inn, room 45, if you need to talk." "Thanks, Scully, good night." "Night, Mulder." As Scully walked down the hall, she spotted a janitor. She tapped him on the shoulder. "Scully! You scared the shit out of me!" "Sorry Frohike. Thanks for keeping an eye on Mulder." "No problem. Langly is going to let him know we're here and Byers is still working on those pictures you took. Pretty impressive and interesting, beautiful eyes. Have you told Mulder what you saw?" Scully sighed. "No, I haven't had time what with Fowley, the headaches, and his mother! God, I still can't believe her!" "I know!" Frohike agreed. "What the hell is her problem anyway? A 12 year old boy can't stop three men with guns!" Scully nodded and looked at her watch. "I have to get going. Call me if anything happens." "Sure thing, sexy!" Scully groaned. If she wasn't so tired, she would have kicked him in the crotch. Maggie Scully's Home "I'm shocked!" Maggie Scully said. "How could a mother do that to the only child she has left!" "I don't know mom." Scully answered, cleary upset by this herself. "Dana, I know you're sad for him but you're going to have to be strong. He won't be able to get through this if you're not." "You're right mom. Are you okay with him staying here? I don't want him to have to stay at home alone." "Of course, dear, I want to be in Fox's life as much as possible. I know I won't be able to replace his mother, but I want to be there for him." Scully hugged her. "Thanks, mom, that means a lot." "Why don't you get some sleep?" Maggie said kissing her daughter's cheek. "Good idea. Night mom." Next Day Scully helped Mulder out of the car. He was still a little dizzy. Maggie came out and grabbed his bag. "Fox, it's good to see you." "Hi, Mrs. Scully." he said with a slight smile. Mrs. Scully headed inside as Mulder thought about his mom. He felt a twinge of pain in his chest. He was going to have a panic attack, he could barely breath. "Scully..." he whispered. "Mulder? Are you alright?" she asked. She saw him holding his chest. A heart attack? No, it couldn't be. Scully looked back at the house, a panic attack! He was thinking of his mom. Mulder sank to the ground and Scully knelt down next to him. She saw the tears in his eyes. "Mulder, take a deep breath, that's good." He was looking at the ground when he started breathing normally. Scully lifted his chin making Mulder look into her eyes. "Mulder say something." Mulder said the only thing that came to his mind. "I love you, Scully." He pulled her face close to his and gently kissed her on the lips. "Dana! Fox!" Mrs. Scully called from inside the house. "Mr. Skinner is on the phone." Scully got up and smiled at her partner. "I love you too, Mulder. When you're ready to get up, come inside." "Sir?...What?...When?...How?...Yeah, he's here...I'll tell him. I can't?...Why not?...Go figure!...thank you, sir." She hung up. Maggie saw her daughter's face. "Dana, you look like you've seen a ghost, honey, what's wrong?" "It's...it's...oh my God, how is he going to take this?" "What Dana?" "Do you remember that woman, Diana Fowley?" She nodded. "She's Mulder's ex-wife. He still cares for her very much. But mom, Diana was found dead in her apartment this morning." Mulder finally got up from the ground. He was so glad he told Scully how he felt. Mulder headed toward the Scully home smiling for the first time in weeks. It felt good to do that again. "Hey," he said to the two women. "What did the boss want this time? Did I use up too many sick--" He stopped when he saw their expressions. "What's wrong?" Mulder sighed *Damn, I knew I couldn't keep my good mood for a long time!* "What happened, Scully?" Maggie had retreated to the kitchen as Mulder sat down. Scully took his hand. "Mulder..." "What?" "Skinner said, he told me.." "What Scully?" "It's Diana." "What about her?" "She's dead, Mulder, she was found in her apartment this morning." "Dead? How?" "She shot herself." Scully saw the look of disbelief in his eyes. "Diana wouldn't kill herself. She wouldn't. The Cancer Man did or he had someone else kill her! Scully, I want you to do an autopsy." She shook her head. "I can't, they won't allow me to do it." "Why not?" "They have someone else doing it." "Yeah so they can cover their asses!" Mulder said angrily. Scully gave him a hug. They were about to kiss again when Scully's cell phone rang. "Of course!" She muttered. "Scully. Yeah, you did?...Great, we'll be right there." Hanging up, she said, "Come on, Mulder, the Lone Gunmen and I have something to show you!" Offices of the Lone Gunmen "Mulder, did you enjoy those videos we hooked you up with last night?" Mulder gave Frohike an evil look and Byers and Langly through wads of paper at him. "I thought you were supposed to rest last night, Mulder." "I was, I mean, I did," he stammered. "That's one week X-Files free! Want to go for more?" Scully said grinning. "No, one is enough!" he answered. Changing the subject, Mulder asked what was so important. "When you first went to the hospital, I went to the Ivory Coast--" "With or without a bikini?" Frohike asked. He ducked as more wads of paper came towards him. "Sorry, couldn't resist. Please continue." "When I arrived on the beach, a man took me to where they found the artifact. Mulder I have photographs of what I saw and I can still barely believe it!" Byers handed him one. "This is what I saw when we were in Antarctica, Scully!" "You know what that means, Mulder, don't you?" "If we're right, Colonization will begin right on schedule." Scully nodded. Looking at the photo, Mulder noticed the edges curling up. "What the-?" Mulder dropped it on the floor. "Shit!" "Mulder? What are you doing?" Byers, Frohike, and Langly stepped away from the other photos on the desk. "It was melting, in my hands, Scully!" She looked at the rest of them. They were melted beyond recognition! The five stared at each other, none of them wanting to try to explain what just happened, not even Dana Scully. THE END Thanks for sitting through my story! Feedback is welcome and appreciated!
