I KNOW that the whole world dosen't exactly WANT these two get involved, but, hey? One MUST have SOMETHING to do with one's spare time, musn't they? I AM a true-blue-funky-monkey-X-Phile, I just....I tend to wander everytime I think about this song. It sounds like it could be a motto for Mulder and Scully's unike relationship, but, then again, I don't really think that C.Carter is a fan of Enigma. Sigh, X-Files, Mulder, Scully, and all assorted junk are property of CC, FB, and 1013 Productions. "Return to Innocence" by Kris Abel aka BEAST It was late, around 3 am when Dana Scully roused herself from sleep to the sound of a knock at her door. Groggily, she flipped on the lights and wrapped a robe about her blue pajama-clad body. "Coming," she grunted as she padded barefoot to her front door. She opened it to reveal a palid-faced man staring forlornly at her. "Mulder, what is it?" She asked. He choked out a single sentence:"Can I come in, Scully?" Quickly, Scully grabbed his arm and pulled him inside. He permitted himself to be dragged to sit down on her couch while she perched opposite him on the coffee table. "Mulder, what's wrong?" Scully asked, concern filling her eyes as her hand reached out to grab his. "Scully, I-they-they..," He babbled. "They what?" She softly asked. Mulder looked down and studied the couch's pattern. "They killed my mother." He blurted out as his lips began to tremble. "Skinner just called to tell me. They killed her, Scully." Hazel eyes filled with tears gazed into hers. "My whole family is gone now. I-I'm all alone." He said. Suddenly, he reached out to grab Scully and hold her tight against him. "You're all I have now. All I have." He sobbed into her neck. Scully settled herself on his lap and held his head to her shoulder as he cried himself to coughing. When the tears were gone, he carefully laid himself back down on the couch, still holding her, and covered them both with the afghan from the back of her couch. "Thank you, Dana." He murmured as he drifted off; his face nestled in her hair as his body gloved hers. Scully smiled sadly and snuggled closer. "You're welcome," she said simply. In a few minutes, he was sound asleep. Carefully, she disengaged herself from him and headed for the phone. Looking up a certain number, she called the nurse's number who attended to Mrs.Mulder ever since the death of her ex-husband. The nurse answered the phone cheerily and replied that Mrs. Mulder was just fine and sleeping soundly. Scully thanked the woman and turned back to her exhausted partner on the couch. *He dreamed his mother died*, she thought and then tenderly went back to him to his arms. He murmured something in his sleep and liad down on the couch; taking her with him. Instinctively, he curled around her in sleep. With a soft sigh of forbidden content, Scully allowed herself to drift off in this position. The rain was still coming down when Mulder woke up. Something sweet and ticklish rested right under his sensitive nose; causing him to sneeze. He brought up a hand to brush whatever it was away, when he remembered last night. Awakign laden with sweat in his apartment, the mad dash to Scully's, crying on her shoulder, falling asleep with his partner....Jesus, am I in trouble! Mulder opened his eyes to fully see what was happening. Scully lay on her side; her hands clasped over his large ones around her waist. Her beautiful, auburn hair was covering his entire face. Deeply, he breathed in her scent of soap, roses, and...warmth. Her body was warm and deliriously close to his as he held her tighter to him. *It was all a nightmare*, he chided himself. *Are your nightmares getting so bad that you can't even distinguish them from reality? Has the unflappable Spooky finally lost his balance on the razor's edge?* A shiver coursed down his spine at the thought. No, he was most definitely sane. It would take a lot more nightmares for him to lose that precious balance. *But what about Scully? How much longer would SHE be able to hold on?* A more pronounced shudder shook him and he held his tiny friend closer to him. As long as he lived, he knew that he would do everything in his power to keep her from losing her sanity and her self over him and his files. Promising himself that it would only be for a moment, he bent his head down to gently caress the back of her neck with his lips. Scully's skin was soft and warm under his sensitive mouth. It was rare that he could ever be physically close to this tiny wonder of life and the moments that he did get he used to the fullest. Like the time when that bastard Pfaster had gotten her...she had felt more secure and right in his arms then than any other woman he had *ever* held before. It was after that night that Mulder had realized that there was never going to be any going back to *normal*. They had crossed the line that borders between the regular world of innocence and the harsh, cruel world of the devious government cover-ups. A lone tear came out his eye to hit the back of her neck. *No more innocence for me or her*. Scully's alarm had gone off full-blast in the other room; causing soft, yet clear notes of a song to Mulder's ears in the living room. It sounded like an African-American song, but then the lyrics came and he realized it was American. "Love, love, love Devotion, devotion, devotion Feel it, feel it, feel it Emotion, emotion, emotion," The words drifted on an unseen breeze to tease his mind with images. Scully crying in his arms, the death of his father, the needless death of Lucy..Mulder squeezed his eyes shut in pain. "Don't be afraid to be weak Don't be proud to be strong Just look into your heart my friend That will be the return to yourself A return to innocence." More tears squeezed out of his eyes as the song gently wafted him to let loose his sadness. Next to him, Scully began to stir as the song woke her up. "A return to innocence. If you want and start to laugh If you must and start to cry Just tell yourself, hold tight Just believe in destiny Don't care what people say Just follow your own way Don't give up and lose the chance A return to innocence." Scully turned over to face him and caressed her cheek with her right hand. Her eyes bore into his mind a simple message: "I'm here." He buried his face in her neck and began to cry harder than last night, harder than he'd cried when Samantha had disappeared...and when Scully had been dying on a hospital bed. Because these tears were all of those events rolled into one, hysteric, long fit of sobbing. And all through it, Scully held him tight and softly murmured soothing nothings into his ear. For she knew, what he had been thinking. No, their innocence had been lost long ago..and they could never really return to it as long as the X-Files were in their lives. "That's not the beginning of the end It's a return to inner self A return to innocence." The song lightly drifted off as her alarm went back to snooze automatically. Mulder's tears ended and he lifted his head weakly to smile shyly at her. "Thanks," he said, reaching out to hug her tight for a second. She grinned back at him. "C'mon, I'll make you breakfast and then we can go to work and explain to Skinner exactly why we're so LATE for work." She said, disentangling herself from his arms. Scully stuck out her hand to help him up off the couch. Instead, he leapt to his feet and gave her a soft kiss on her mouth. Momentarily, she leaned into the kiss; applying a little more pressure as the kiss deepened and filled her soul up. Mulder's arms wrapped around her small waist and lifted her effortlessly up into his arms. Scully wrapped her own arms around his neck in response. In that rainy moment, the sky cleared briefly as the sun shot through the clouds to illuminate a single apartment building. The couple seemed to shine with the power of the truth as the sunlight haloed them in front of the windows. For the partners, it was as if they were being filled to the brim with renewed confidence, strength, and an added ingredient to keep the boogeyman away at night. As suddenly as it had come, the sun dispersed back behind it's cloud; leaving the rain and bleak sky behind. But the agents barely noticed it as the light within them shone in their eyes. Mulder lowered Scully to the floor; his large hands taking hers. Hazel eyes smiled into aqua sapphire seas as a grin lit up his mouth. "Wanna call in sick today, Scully?" He teased. She grinned and then laughed. "Why not? I don't think we'd get much done anyways...," She said and then went over to the phone to dial Skinner's number. Mulder began to whistle as he sat back down on the couch and began flipping through the cable. All the while, his eyes were fixated on his partner's slender form. Nope, DEFINITELY wouldn't get much done today..... ******** FINIS I know, I know! I left out the good part! Well, if I get enough response to this story, I'll let out the second half to this story.
