Title: Holiday Seasons Author: Mary Spoilers: there are some scatered around. rating: PG ( no bad situation, maybe some bad words) keywords: MSR, S angst, M angst. Alternative universe. ( NoRoMos beware!!!!!!) feedback: Mary@x-files.zzn.com Summary: Many tears have we seen their lives, but what if every single thing we saw, never took place? How to get home? Archive: Of course ,but keep my name and everything else I put with it. Besides letting me know where it heads. Thanx! In 1999, really close to christmas, I got really sick, how to discribe? Well I would read no other story beside chrismas ones. And beleive me, there are many out there... Anyway, I read a lot of stories about christmas until I couldn't find anymore of them. Back to february, when school had just started, I read a story called 'Dying Wish'. That got me thinking of what if? What if Mlder and Scully had never met? I've read some fanfic that explored the idea, but always from Mulder's POV. What about Scully? So when I started writting this story I decided I would concentrate on Scully. Well, in the end I did the story with both Scully's and Mulder's POVs. He will apear and be very important to the story. Hope you enjoy it!! Disclaimer: I usually don't read disclaimers but they're necessary, so... Mulder, Scully, Margaret, Bill and Charlie Scully aren't mine. But, although I don't know the rest of Scully's family, I think that those present here don't exist on the X- Files reality. All the rest belong to CC and 1013 Productions. Autor's notes: besides Scully's apartament, Mulder's Apartment and John F. Kennedy airport, all the locations in here are fake, they don't exist. Mostly because it's hard to find a place that suits my wantings. But I will do everything so it won't make much diference. The story is mostly around the characters. And if you like the story please let me know, if you find something you didn't like, write me anyway and let me know. The only way I'm going to improve my writting is with your help. One more thing. I don't intend to finish this story if I don't get feedback. Just one e-mail is enough as MOTIVATION. One more thing I need beta readers. I have plenty of stories here on my hardrive, which could use some reading so they can be posted. Thanks to Ana Regina and Isabela for suporting me through my hard times. Ana Carolina for still being my friend after all we've been through. And also Joanna for endless laughs when I was down. THANKS! I love you guys!! On with the show... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx HOLIDAY SEASONS by Mary Part I : Scully's POV SCULLY'S APARTMENT GEORGETOWN December 22nd The winter arrived later that year but when it came, it came with all strengh. The sky had been dark for the last couple of days and snow had been threatning to fall for some time. The nights had been very cold. Due to all that, the streets had been mostly empty and lonely. Almost no car could be seen driving around. Anyone who didn't need to work, stayed at home. Even the Federal Bureal of Investigation hadn't much work to do. Most of their agents were given vacation time. A.D. Skinner had personaly made sure his two agents; Fox Mulder and Dana Scully; also took some time off. It was already late at night, when Dana Scully arrived home. When their boss had come to praticaly kick them out, she was greatful, because this christmas The Scully family was doing a gathering far from D.C. and Dana really wanted to go, specially because she hadn't attended last year. Outside there was a snowstorm going on. It took her long to get home because of it and she was kind of worried that her flight would be canceled. Her family would have more to talk about her and Bill would put more fire on the fact that she hadn't shown up last year for Christmas. She never regreted it, even though Bill would never forgive her. < That matter again...> Not that she would mind, if she really lost her plane, she could spent Christmas with Mulder. Which wasn't a bad idea at all.< Still...> She placed her coat on a chair and lighted the lamp on top of the small table. Somehow, keeping the lights low helped her remembering Mulder's place. She didn't recall when she started doing that, it just became a habit of hers. Dana sat herself on the couch and just stared at the emptiness. Thinking of nothing particualy. Then she reached for the phone and dialed the airport's number. "Hello, may I help you?" on the other end of the phone a woman asked. "Yes, I would like to know if flight 159, to Solenth is still up for tonight?" Scully's voice was low and could easily crack. < God, I need some sleep...> "Yes." Scully hang up. Her bags were already packed up and she had said goodbye to Mulder at the office. They hadn't talked about the holidays since it was a hard time for Mulder. She didn't even think he knew where she was heading. < Well better this way, maybe being some time away from him will do me some good > <'Yeah, right!'> That little voice inside her kept nagging Dana. Okay, she wasn't very fond of the idea of letting Mulder alone in Washington. He had that talent of his for getting himself into trouble very easily. On any ocasion. < I think he does it to call atention. Doesn't he know my thoughts and atentions are all his since the first time I saw him? 'Aparently not'. Oh shut up!> Dana usually knew she needed some sleep when she started argueing with herself. Scully looked at her watch and decided that there was still time for a quick bath. So she stood up and went to the bathroom. *** A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER IN SOLENTH There, in a small chale on the mountains, the Scully family gathered for the holiday season. Not everyone had arrived yet, but there was already Bill Jr., Maggie, John, Beth, Charlie, Tara, Mathew, Annie, Frankie and Jonathan. They all came to spent christmas in a family reunion. It was a rare moment to gather all the family together. Margaret Scully was very happy to see her hole family all together, expect for Dana. She had promised to come on the 23rd of december, right after her vacation came out. She was kind of worried Dana wouldn't come, since she hadn't shown up last christmas. Maggie knew she spent it with Fox. Although she was sure they were not lovers, she couldn't deny they suited each other perfectly, nor the fact that Dana's eyes always lighted up when he was mentioned or around. Actualy, no one could deny they had a bond. Something... Special. Right now she was talking with her younger brother, John. He was 3 years younger than her. He had never goten married and for what she remembered he was only in love once. But the woman broke his heart and he never loved again. Or so he said. Maggie never really understood what happend. But she guessed no one really did. He used to say that passions comes and goes, but true love came only once in a life time, if ever.. He didn't seemed to be unhappy, he always smiled and made sure people smiled too, but if you looked into his eyes you could see an enormous sadness and even emptyness. He missed her. Maggie belived in true love but not only once in a life time. Love was something beyond anyone's comprehention. She belived you could love again, although she hadn't fallen in love since Bill passed away. < Now there, no time to feel sad. This is a happy ocasion.> "So, where is Dana?" John asked, pulling her out of her thoughts. "She will be here tomorrow, she had to work until today." At least she hoped so. "Ahn... Is she bringing a date?" < Why all that curosity about Dana, what has Bill Jr been saying to the rest of the family? she wondered.> "I don't think so." Her voice was kind of suspicious. "What don't you think so?" the familiar voice made them both turn around, surprised. "Dana?" Dana Scully had a smile on her face and still had her heavy coat on. Her hair was shorter than John remembered it, but for her mother it was longer than normal. "Yeah. Why are you so suprised to see me?" she still smiled when she noticed her uncle John standing next to her mother. She smiled more brodly. "Uncle John, how nice to see you." "No, nothing. I only expected you to be here tomorrow." answered Maggie. Moving to hug her uncle that retrieved very happily, Dana gave her mother an explanation. "I've got an early flight, so I got here earlier. Skinner let us go sooner than we thought he would." She started to take her coat off. Outside was frizing but here inside was really cozy. "That's great, Dana. Let's talk, since we don't see each other very much." John smiled and started to walk in the direction of the living roon near by. "Sure, why don't you catch something for us to drink and I join you right away?" Dana couldn't help but smiling still. It was something which always happened when John was around. "Of course." so he went to the kitchen to catch some coffee. Knowing the reason of the request. Dana turned to her mother and asking with her face and voice: "You were talking about me , weren't you?" "Yes. But nothing bad, I promise." She lit a smile "Come on. Lets meet John" They both went into the living room where all family were together. Dana huged and greeted everyone. And as they all started to chat, Dana just stared, knowing that the happiness they shared she would probraly never have. Mathew, her godson had already one and a half years. He was waking and started talking and also looked just like Bill, let it be god's will he doesn't have his father's temper. Charlie and his wife Beth were proudly telling everyone about little Annie and Frankie. She missed Emily AND Mulder. The only ones who were quiet were Jonathan and John who never participated on the conversation anyway, just smiled. *** Slowly Dana lost interest in the conversation. Lost in thought, she traveled a thousand miles away. Back in Washington, where Mulder was, where her heart was. She could almost see him there lying on his counch whatching films that weren't his... That brought a smile to her face. She wondered what he was doing now. Mulder wasn't much fond of christmas. His apartment didn't have any lights nor a christmas tree. Is he thinking about me as I'm thinking about him, she wondered. If it took her long to notice she loved Mulder, it took her even more time to admit it to herself. How, she didn't know, but she was sure her mother noticed as well. So did Bill. Otherwise why would he hate Mulder so much? Bill had never liked any of her boyfriends and was responsable for two of them dumping her. Gossip was not unknown for the Scully family. She was sure that by now her hole family had at least a slight idea of her feelings for Mulder. And if any of them tried to hide it. Failed badly. Still totaly lost in her thoughts, she didn't noticed John staring at her. He must have been suprised for the smile she held. But still looked a mile away distant. "Dana, honey, I really could use your help." the excuse wasn't original, he knew, but it was the best he could do. He got up and was leaving the room, hoping Dana would follow him. "What? Ahn, sorry, uncle John... I would love to hep you." she also got up and turned only to excuse herself, before heading behind John. In meantime she glanced at Bill who gave her a disaproving look that she was used to see since Bill first meet Mulder. He knew why she wasn't participating of the conversation. He knew she was thinking of him. They both went to another room where John sat on a large sofa. Amazenly he had a huge smile on his lips and his voice came out soothing and low. He was thrilled. < I wonder why he smiles so much when his eyes show a burden so deep that I don't understand or why he was always calm...?>she wondered "So, who is he?" She came closer and sat on another sofa near her uncle. On her face she expressed an unspoken question that was not answered. Her eyes couldn't hide the love she felt. Of that she was aware. < Like our smoking friend would do... Deny everything, or at least try.> "I have no idea what you're talking about" she avoided his look when she spoke. "You don't? That wouldn't be my guess. Tell me, who has the grace to steal your thoughts away from us? Who is the soul blessed with your love?" < God it was really obvious then. Why haven't Mulder seen it yet?> "Very poetic. But untrue. I don't have a boyfriend." She smiled. A fake smile that was seen by her wise uncle John. "That was not what I asked." His voice showed trust, peace and wisdom. He wasn't going to give up that easily. < Danm, uncle John > For a moment neither of them spoke. Scully tried to avoid his gaze, but as he showed, years taught him well enough. Then, not expecting her to answer he spoke himself. In a low tone that showed he was drifting in his thoughts. "Dana, I learned a lesson maybe you have as well. One that shows how short life is. I had everything in my life to be happy, but one... I will tell you a story, my dear, and I think you should trust me when I say, I do understand about pain. I have been through a lot, things you might have been through as well, or maybe not. I have lost the closest person to me, and for the more people tell me it wasn't my falt, I know it was. Not for a misstep, nor for a lie. But because I waited too much and I thought, even for the briefest moment that I could fix the world. But I couldn't. And in my atemp to do so, I lost her. I lost her for someone else, and that one lost her to God..." "She died?" Dana for some reason had to know, because not everything brought tears to her eyes. Maybe was because she related herself to the story, however she would never admit it. " She kiled herself, and I remember her last words... 'We will met in heaven, but only when you are ready to... I ... < cough, cough > love... you...'" The silence returned. Maybe if it was a stranger, his story would bring pity and nothing else. But after all she went through, she knew it meant something. That this simple story was a message of wisdom, something he took a lifetime to learn. Still, unaware of their audience, both exchanged glances. And the air that remained between them was used to pass a mesage unheard by the outside world. And as if he actually said it, she understood what his eyes only showed. "Don't make the same mistakes I've done" With one quick glance he stood up. Noticing, finally, the presence in the room. Gathered in a corner of that room, the hole family watched John's speech. Their looks gave away their pity. As fast as his old body allowed, he ran away. Not ready yet to face their looks. Maybe he would never be. Even after all those years. Scully didn't stood up. She just stayed there, watching as each member of her family gave her an disaproving look like Bill had done so many times before. Not caring at all, she drifted back to her thoughts. Back to Mulder. She knew her uncle was right and she also knew she had risked loosing everything many times and couldn't afford to ever loose him completely. But of all, what she feared the most was rejection... Not from her family, though she felt indiferent to them... Not from her friends who didn't understand her... but from him. He was the best friend she ever had, a caring person who didn't look with pity. Who was always there for her when she needed him. Who understood her nightmares and shared them. Who had her heart completly to himself. Finally standing up, she left the room in a very slow pace. A silent massege that showed she didn't care for others opinions. *** BACK IN D.C. ALEXANDRIA THAT SAME NIGHT Christmas never brought the best of Fox Mulder. Since he never had christmas among family and usually spent it alone. But maybe what made this one worst than any other christmas was that his beloved wasn't anywhere near. It took him awhile to notice. Actually, he knew it from the beginning but he took time to admit it to himself that he loved Scully. Last christmas he spend with her after, he must say, a frightning experience. But it wasn't the life threat the made it frighting but the realisation that he was drowning her. Taking her life away. And for what reason? Not having at least the courage to tell her that he loved her? "Damn it!!" He didn't mean for that to come out loud but since there wasn't anyone near him, it didn't matter. Looking at the phone he had the thought of calingl her but that thought sliped away as fast as it had come. He had no idea where she was staying, strangely they hadn't exchange more than a word or two for the last couple of days and so all he knew was that she was meeting her family somewhere in the mountains. Finding her was a long shot in the dark. Still was a shot... Rinnnng. When the phone rang Mulder didn't thought twice. He grabed it quickly and hoped to God it was Scully. "Mulder" his voice didn't hide his impatiance. "Fox, is that you?" The voice of a woman who brought some memories answered instead of Scully's. He made everything possible not to show disapointment when he responded. " Marion?" he wasn't exactly making a question because he knew it was really her. "It's been so long I almost didn't recnised your voice. How are you doing?" "SO..SO. My boyfriend just dumped me. And I assumed you would be alone this christmas, don't ask why, so I have an invitation to make. There is, if don't have any plans already?" Marion was three months younger than him. So they practaly grew up together. She was his favorite cousin. But after Sam had gone missing they kind of lost contact. And after they grew older, they drifted apart. While he came to England she went to Canada to study medicine. "You want to propose something to me because your boyfriend isn't coming and you hate spending christmas alone? Tell me I'm right" " Exactly." her voice showed she was worried he might refuse. "Shoot." Marion was very alike Mulder. Always making jokes to make life easier. " Want to join me for christmas in a chale in Solenth. But don't be fooled by the name, it's freezing cold out there." "I see what you were paning to do over the holiday." He couldn't hide the chuckle that came afterwards. Then he stoped, he really didn't have any plans. "What the heck... I would love to. When do we leave?" "Tomorrow at noon. I promise you won't recret it, besides we have to catch up our chatting." She wasn't shy anymore. Her voice was cheerful and happy. " I meet you there in front of the baggage reclaim in John F. Kennedy's airpot at 11: 30. OKAY?" Again he joked remembering the old times when they used to play at Samantha's expence. "Yes, comander. Flight at twelve hundred hours." She laughed at the other end and hung up with only a 'See you there'. "Yeah, see you there. Well my christmas is not going to be that bad..." Who was he kidding. Nothing would be better than be with Scully by his side. Maybe he was being selfish but at that moment he didn't care. Only then did he remember he forgot to ask where Solenth was. Hell, it didn't mattered. *** LATE AT NIGHT IN SOLENTH After her conversation with uncle John, she had looked for him to make sure he was alright. He asked to be left alone and she consented only adivising him that he wasn't alone. At least not anymore. Then she left. Still needing to say something but not knowing what. Also not in the mood to face her family and listen to stories about Annie and Frankie she went to her room claiming to her mother that she was tired from the journey and needed some rest. Now she laid on a small counch there in her room. Thinking while she heard clasical music playing. Thousand thoughts crossing her mind. Since what would be her next case. To the fact she missed Mulder so much. < Oh, Mulder where are you... What if I called him? No, no. He would think I'm calling to keep him in line. Maybe I could call him tomorrow. Just a 'Merry Christmas'. That wouldn't hurt, right? Who am I kidding. If I continue like this I'm going insane. Danm you, Mulder. Why do you have to be so charming and cute? Uhr... Stop thinking about him!! Think about something else, anything!> *** WHILE THE SUN WAS RISING The tears sprung down her cheecks, like rain in the clouds. She was crying for every fear and for every pain she had hold on to the past years. Crying for things she had never known and for things which were there for her but she was to afraid to reach. < So many men and women, who have crossed my path were so much wiser than I. They knew truths I have always seeked but ould never find. I remember when I was younger, a friend of mine feel in love with a guy everyone thouhgt was bad influence. But she trusted him. And somehow, he trusted her. Not in common sence, but to keep his secret hidden. When one day, they found her raped, I was shocked... That's when I placed the first block on the wall today I carry so high. And with the small fact that I have no luck with men only increased the wall over the years. Until I met Mulder. Outside he was such a bad boy. And even still I fell in love with him. Yeah, I stopped denying it a while ago. I know that Mulder is nothing of a bad boy and the last thing he would do is think of hurting me. I know, but until I convinced myself of that two years ago, we were already miles apart. I do trust him, it's not that, I'm afraid he'll eventually break my heart. I know that 'they lived happily ever after' doesn't exist. But be happy is all I want, even if not forever. And I know for sure I can't be happy without him by my side.> What uncle John had said was entirely true. She was afraid of so many things. But mostly, she was afraid to loose him, she was frightned to reach for Mulder and make him back away. Out of her life, away from her soul. That's when she comited the mistake... "I wish... I..." < I wish things were diferent, maybe if we had never met...> The words, even if only by thought came out in a low whisper before she could even consider its consequences. Maybe she didn't expect anyone to hear, maybe she didn't want anyone to hear, but you know what they say... She slowly fell asleep, into a deep slumber, a final tear scaping her eyes. 'Watch out what you wish for.' And even in sleep she brought Mulder's shirt closer to her heart. While a star shone in the sky. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Part II Deep in my heart I'm counseling things that I wanted to say scared to confess how I'm feeling Frightned you'll slip away -- Madonna-- SOLENTH Slowly, as she had fallen asleep, she woke up. She didn't think of the possibility that a wish could come true but she felt diferent. A feeling she couldn't pinpoint, nor explain. She felt sad and harmed. LOSS < That's it, that's what I feel. Loss. What does that mean or why...?> Although she felt the pain, the change inside, she didn't noticed her black outfit, her longer hair or her scarred arm. < What's going on here?> Knock! Knock! She was so deep in thought that she was startle to hear the door. < Maybe I overslept...> Before she could answer or even get up, there was a soft click and the door opened. And through the small opening, there came a head. It was her mother's. "Dana? Sweetheart?" the voice was low like a whisper, but not on purpose. It seemed that it wouldn't come out diferently. It couldn't. In the corner of her eyes you could see dried tears, which she didn't try to hide. Her eyes were sadned and her head was low, like she couldn't look at Dana, for she would do something wrong. " Yes?" Scully's right eyebrow rose and her eyes became wide open. "Mom? Are you alright?" Her mother nodded and her gaze fell to the floor. < What's going on?> And like herself the words came out devoid of emotion, in a low voice " I'll be fine." < Something is wrong > " Andrew Henner is downstairs. He gave his apologies for coming on a lousy time, but he needs to talk to you." "Who?" "Your lawyer, Dana! What's the matter with you?" it seemed obvious that she should know, but she didn't have a lawyer. < Something is definately wrong!! > Only then, that Scully started getting worried, did she noticed the familiar sorundings. They were at her mother's house, not at Solenth anymore. Finally she rose and saw the black dress she was wearing through the mirror. And without turning around, she said: " I'll be downstairs in a second. " And with that, her mother, Margaret, took the cue to leave. < Alright, don't panic! Don't say much. Get to know what's going on and call Mulder. Yes, Mulder will know what to do... She was crying? Mom what hapenned to you?> Being in black as well as her mother, Scully assumed something important was taking place. She was already out of the door after pouding her nose and fixing herserf, when it hit her. < A funeral? My God, who died? > She was soon to find out. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx When she got downstairs she confirmed her suspicions. It was really a funeral. Her mother's house was full of people. Some who she recnised and some she didn't, but they were all there with saddned eyes and bowed heads. She was trying hard to act neutral, while a thousand thoughts crossed her mind. < Who could it be? Billy? Charlie? Mulder???? Oh, God, I need to remember when I came back from Solenth. When is now? Could I be dreaming? No, my dreams have never seemed so real... God, please, help me! > As if Heaven's Door opened everything fell into place. The night, the wish, the hair. Why she didn't remeber... "Mrs. Strausmann?" the voice came from behind her and although she couldn't place it, she felt she knew it. She didn't turn around to answer the name, but because she wanted to see the person's face. "Mrs. Strausmann?" the person, a man of about 40, tall and handsome, spoke again. He was looking right at her. "Scully. Dana Scully." I wasn't the feeling that made her speak, it was the certanty that for once she belived in the impossible first. She couldn't prove it, nor could she explain it. She just knew it. And her worst fear was not of not being able to come back. It was Mulder's whereabouts which gotten her worried. But for the time, she decided to play along. "I'm sorry, Miss Scully. It's just hard to call you a different name. However, you are right. You are no longer Dana Strausmann."he made a pause as if looking for words which weren't there. "I know now is not a good time, with your daughter's funeral, but as you know the trial is tomorrow..." He must have been suprise due to the coal stare Scully gave him. So neutral, without showing any emotions at all. She was used to keeping her emotions at bay even with painful news she was going to burry another daughter she hadn't met. < Things haven't changed much...> "And?" even when sadness overruled her, she could remain serious like now. " Anything wrong about the trial? If yes, say it soon!" by now her eyebrow was almost reaching her hairline. < Trial, trial, trial... My daughter is dead... Could it be?> "Well, the trial is tomorrow and... and yesterday you said you weren't coming and it is important that you do. Agent Mulder, as you know the profiler, said you don't need to stay through the hole trial, just to come, answer some questions and go home." < He seemed so frightned that he looks to be shorter than me. What must I have said yesterday? He is scared of me! Maybe I can make a scene and... MULDER Did he say 'Agent Mulder'?> "How did you say was the profiler's name??" she asked quickly. "What?" he was really suprised, so much that his eyes were wide open. And as always, Scully's face remained untouched. "The profiler's name? How was it?" Andrew Henner swollowed dry. Shock was evident on his face. Which made Scully drift her eyes to other's present on the room. There were many other faces she couldn't place, still everyone looked at her as if she had gone mad. Which maybe was her next step, if things kept like that. < God. I am probaly looking like a freak to them... Ah! What the hell!" "Mr. Henner, isn't it?" he simply nodded "Well, you don't seem comfortable speaking to me and honestly I couldn't care less, but if you answer my question, I answer yours. Okay?" another nod. Her voice made no crack and her posture remained completely professional. "Special Agent Fox Mulder." on contrast, Henner's voice was almost unheard. ANd she couldn't help but smile. < Mulder wasn't so hard to reach, things would be alright.> And still with a smile on her face she answered Henner's question. "Yes I'll be there. Through the hole trial. Is that a good answer to you?" her face, her voice, her heart showed relief by knowing Mulder was alright and at arm's reach. And without second glances, she turned around, tying to find something which could give her any clues on what had happened to her on this world for the past years. For harder it seemed, she didn't dismiss the fantastic, the idea that a dream could come true. Pretending not to know, when the truth laid within her, as it had for awhile. She was at her mother's house. That was obvious. The funeral was confirmed to be true, when her body unwillingly, moved foward. There with flowers covering its presence, laid a 'small' white coffin. It was opened, allowing the world one last glance at the beauty. Scully gulped when she saw the white little dress which covered the little girl. She seemed at peace, with her eyes closed. Her hair, beautifully pulled back on a bunnytail, was light blond. She looked amazinly like Emily. And if even possible Scully paled even more... < Why? > A single tear ran down her check. Then more tears followed its path. She had no will to stop them from coming, to restrict this moment from herself. She felt lost, on more ways than others. She HAD lost Mulder... She had lost everything. *** "Here I am Standing on this room Holding tears which wast to fall Knowing so much have changed. And yet Everything is still the same..."
