This story is stupid, with a capital S, but until it was written I couldn't get the dumb song out of my head! It was written in one sitting, and justly reflects that. --------------------------------------------------------- 'Well, Hello Scully!' (1/1) by Nancy misfiled@xtalwind.net written 4/10/97 Apparently, waking up was going to be hard to do.... That's what Dana Scully concluded muzzily after finding it impossible to open her eyes. Somewhere in the depths of her medical mind, the idea that her eyes wouldn't open on demand was a troubling one, but at that particular moment, it didn't really bother her too much. So tired. ::aching:: Sleep called to her in a seductive whisper. Off to the side something else was whispering --- trying to pull her _out_ of her cocoon. Unwilling to slough off the warm, comfortable spell sleep was casting over her, Dana waved away the pesky fly whispering her name and slid easily down the long dark tunnel to oblivion. That pesky fly whispering her name in an anxiety ridden voice was her FBI partner, Special Agent Fox Mulder. Sitting in the regulation uncomfortable hospital chair next to the head of her bed, he again called her name. 'Scully...c'mon Scully...wake up. I know you can hear me, I saw your fingers twitch.' He hesitated a long moment, waiting to see if she was going to open her eyes THIS time. He really, *really* wanted her to wake up and say 'I'm O.K., Mulder' in that patently un-ok way she had. No, she was still under the influence. Damn, he'd been hoping she'd be awake by the time Maggie arrived. That alone would have been enough to alleviate many of their concerns. Raising his voice slightly, he returned to calling her name and entreating her to wake up... 'Scully! Scully, c'mon now, open your eyes. It's Mulder, Scully. You need to wake up now. Your Mom's going to be here soon. You don't want her finding you asleep on the job, now do you?' Hovering just under a thick blanket of pain killers, Dana Scully heard the fear and concern in her partners voice. She knew it was Mulder, he didn't have to tell her THAT. Mulder was always there when she really needed him....fading out again, she thought...no, got to hang on long enough to tell him I'm ok... Thinking was tiring... and she slipped once again back into a restless slumber. [An hour later] Assistant Director Walter Skinner flashed his badge at the information desk in the hospital lobby and quickly got the room number for his injured agent. As he turned from the desk towards the elevators, he recognized Mrs. Margaret Scully entering the hospital. Crossing to intercept her, he told her that he'd gotten the room number and ushered her towards the elevators. Entering, he turned and pressed 3, then dropped both hands into his pants pockets. 'God,' he sighed,'I really hate hospitals'. Having forgotten for a moment he wasn't alone, he started slightly when Maggie Scully shot him a ruefully pained look and replied,'Raising four kids pretty much inures you to quick trips to the ER, but you never loose that greasy, queasy feeling you take along with you on those trips.' A sudden wave of anger washed over her, and she turned on the man beside her as they stepped off the elevator. 'How could this happen? They weren't even working on a case!' Skinner drew a deep breath and reported, 'I've been told that she was struck by a car leaving the Bureau parking tower. The driver and his family had just finished the civilians tour and were following the exit signs when Agent Scully seemingly leaped into the path of their car. Since they were only moving at about 25 mph, the impact wasn't as bad as it might have been, but she was tossed against one of the cement support posts and hit her head against a parked car as she fell. I haven't spoken to Agent Mulder yet to get the real story behind Agent Scullys 'leap', but I'm sure it was just an accident. We've already run the drivers ID through every computer search available, and he looks 'clean'. Here's her room. I'm sure we'll find Agent Mulder here and he can fill us in on the missing details.' Pushing open the door to room 3101, they found Mulder sitting in the no frills chair, leaning against the raised side bars of Scullys bed ernestly talking to the sleeping woman. Without waiting for Mulder to offer any greeting, Maggie demanded, 'What's wrong with her? What did the doctors find?' Standing, Mulder moved to Maggie and gave her a quick hug. Looking at his boss, he said,' I didn't expect to see you here, Sir.' Skinner, looking slightly embarrassed, shrugged and muttered,'Well, it's on my way home...' and moved towards the hospital bed where his fallen agent lay. Reaching out, he squeezed her hand and spoke to her. "Hello Agent Scully. It's Skinner. Your mothers here. She'd like it if you'd wake up now. You're going to be ok. Mulders here, too.' From experience, he knew that a lot of what was said in a hospital room could actually be heard by an apparently unconscious patient. Words of comfort and care were needed more than silence. Rolling his shoulders to loosen the knot of fear that had settled between his shoulder blades a few hours ago, he turned back towards the other two occupants of the room. Mulder was speaking quietly with Maggie, relaying the doctors findings. As Skinner advanced on them, he heard Mulder say something about bone deep bruising on her hip and thigh, where she'd connected with the bumper and a mild concussion from the rap on the head. She'd needed 3 stitches above the hair line, as well, so would have to do some creative combing for a few weeks. Her left wrist was taped due to a fracture, but that was the extent of her injuries. 'Mulder, the driver said Scully 'leapt' in front of his car. How did that happen? Was she pushed? Did she fall?', were all Maggie asked when he finished reciting the doctors message. With a suddenly haunted look, Mulder, wrapping his arms across his chest and tipping his head toward the ceiling, muttered, 'It was my fault. She was walking several feet ahead of me and I tossed the car keys to her. They went high, and she jumped for them. I didn't see the car coming down that aisle, or I'd never have thrown them to her." Instantly understanding, Maggie rubbed his back and softly murmured, 'It's ok, Mulder. She obviously didn't see the car either, or she wouldn't have gone for the keys. It *was* just an accident. She'll be fine.' Skinner, listening to the two of them had in the mean time been observing Agent Scully. Her rapid eye movement was picking up, so maybe she'd awaken soon and put her mother and partner out of their misery. Pushing away from the wall where he'd been leaning, he turned towards Mrs. Scully and said,'If you need anything or if Dana does, call me at the office or my home. Here's my card. Anytime.' To Mulder, he snapped,'I'll need your report on the accident by noon tomorrow, and stop by and get the proper forms from Personnel to file a report and claim with the insurance agency.' With a last silent glance at the sleeping figure on the bed, he nodded to the two and left. As the big man left the room, the slight figure on the bed moaned and tried to turn her head away from the pain biting at her forehead. Stepping closer to the bed, mother and partner both tried to talk Scully into waking. What *she* heard was a baritone and a tenor both saying 'hello Scully', while a soprano softly called her closer to consciousness. Feeling herself approaching consciousness, Scullys mind began to try to piece together all the broken bits of information circling through her traumatized brain. The effort was painful, and at best unrewarding. She did manage to open her eyes long enough to weakly smile at her mother and Mulder, try to raise her splinted hand to her head and fail. The delighted smile on her mothers face and Mulders big goofy grin made the effort almost worthwhile. Even as Mulder began,' Hey,Scully, you had me worried there for a minute.', she was sinking back into the pain free embrace of her pain killers. As she sank into the cushioned darkness behind her eyes, she was surprised to hear Mulder begin to sing. Even more surprising was the fact that a man sounding a lot like the A.D. joined in on the second line. The A.D. hadn't been there, had he?, she thought to herself drowsily. Amused in a drunken kind of way, Scully floated back to listen as the two men harmonized. "Hello Scul-ly! Well, hello Scul-ly! It's so nice to have you back Where you belong. you're looking swell, Scul-ly we can tell ,Scul-ly you're still growing you're still glowing you're still going strong. we feel the room sway-ing and the band play-ing one of your old favorite songs from way back when < can't hear it...> So leave your hat, Scully You're staying where you're at, Scul-ly Realizing she'd fallen into a healthy sleep, both Mulder and Maggie drew their chairs further away so they could continue to talk without disturbing Dana. Maggie, turning to Mulder, asked, 'Did you see that smile on her face just now? I wonder what she's dreaming about...' Pessimistically, Mulder answered,'Hope it's something sweet, but who knows with a concussion.' A little later, after the nurse had been in checking vital signs and chatting with Maggie, Dana roused enough to ask Mulder, "...'s the A.D. here? ... heard him..." "Yeah, he stopped by for a minute. Wanted to check on you personally." "..'at was nice.... do it again?', Dana asked closing her eyes. The light still hurt them so. Mulder, looking confused, gathered Maggie in with a glance and gently asked,'Do what, Scully? Do what again?" "Sing to me", she breathed. 'Like you did when Skinner was here. Sounded so nice... Maybe next time you could dance, too.' Leaving them totally confused she fell back into a normal sleep. Mulder, brows raised, smiled at Maggie and said,"Well, at least we know what she was dreaming about before. Wonder what Skinner and I were singing in her dream?" ____________________________ The End thank God. :) Nancy
