"Well, Mulder, we can't get a flight back to DC until tomorrow afternoon." "That gives us all this afternoon and tomorrow morning to kill," said Mulder from his prone position on the bed. "What'll we do, Scully? Hmmm?" "We could get all the reports done on this case." "Nah, too boring." "Well, Mulder, what do you suggest?" "Actually," he said slowly rising to a sitting position, "I was thinking about that little amusement park down the road." "Not the one with the miniature golf course," whined Scully as she rolled her eyes. "What's the matter, Scully, afraid I'll beat you at goofy golf?" Scully gave him a look, but not quite the one he expected. "Not on your best day, Mulder." "Oooo, Scully, is that a challenge?" "Take it anyway you like, Mulder." * * * * Mulder drove the red Taurus smoothly into a parking space. He grabbed his black leather jacket from the back seat as Scully got out of the car. They were clad in jeans and t-shirts, a welcome break from regular work attire. Mulder looked admiringly at Scully as she came around the front of the car. Scully saw him staring at her. "What?" "Nothing." She stopped and put her hands on her hips. "What?" He smiled and shrugged. "I was just thinking how nice you look." "In this?" she asked, surprised. His only anwer was another shrug. She shook her head. "Aren't trying to flatter me so I'll let you win, are you, Mulder?" *And you look rather nice, too, especially with that jacket.* "Wouldn't think of it, Scully." He locked the car and pocketed the keys. "This is going to be fun! Let's go." They walked past Humpty Dumpty on a rock, through the arches of the entrance, and past the batting cages to the little booth near the first hole of the miniature golf course. As Mulder got their clubs and balls, Scully looked the course over. A windmill, a mountain, a dragon, a wishing well, some greens with hills, some with levels, some with ramps and slopes. She smiled. This was going to be fun. "Do you want red or blue, Scully?" "Blue," she said, taking the ball and club out of his hands. "Want me to keep score?" "I think I can handle it. You go first." Scully walked up to the first green. "This is a par three hole, Scully." She glared back at him. He put his hands up. "Just thought I'd let you know." Scully put the little blue ball down, carefully looked down the green, took a calculated swing, and sunk the ball in one stroke. She calmly walked to the little hole that had captured her ball and removed it. "Lucky shot, Scully." "Skill, Mulder. Skill." She smiled and sauntered out of his way. Mulder set his ball down, looked at Scully, then swung the club. Scully counldn't help noticing how small the club looked in his hands. The ball bounced off the side and almost went into the next green before making its way toward the hole. It took three more strokes for Mulder to sink the ball. "Par three, huh, Mulder," said Scully as she stood at his shoulder, making sure he recorded the correct numbers. As they made their way through the course, it became apparent to everyone in the place, especially the kids behind them that had to wait for Mulder to play before they got a turn, that Scully was skunking him. As she put her ball down at the last hole and coolly sunk it into the dragon's mouth for a free game, Mulder shook his head in disbelief. "This was a great idea, Mulder. I haven't had this much fun in a long time!" He didn't speak as he put his ball down, swung the little club and watched the ball bounce off the dragon's head and roll down the hole. "Okay, Scully, out with it. When did you become a golf pro?" "It's just miniature golf, Mulder." She grinned evilly. "Oh, alright. It's kind of a Scully tradition. Daddy could never pass up a miniature golf course. Besides, I'm a doctor." "What does your being a doctor have to do with this?" "Doctors play golf, don't they?" Mulder just shook his head again as he returned the clubs. Scully gave her free game to a little red-haired girl in the group behind them. Mulder walked down the concrete path. Scully hurried to catch up. "What now, Mulder?" "There's gotta be something here I can win. What are you really bad at, Scully?" "Mulder!" she said as she hit him on the arm. "What a sore loser!" "I was just kidding!" he said, throwing up his arms in defense. "No, you weren't." "Yes, I was." He caught her look out of the corner of his eye and winced. "Well, sort of." He walked a little faster as he spotted a basketball hoop and balls. "Now, we're talking!" He laid money on the counter and picked up a ball. "Prepare for defeat, Scully." He took careful aim and handily sunk the ball into the basket. "Nothing but net!" They continued with the game. Mulder won, but not by much. He picked up an armfull of stuffed animals they had won. "I never knew you were so good at basketball, Scully." "You never asked, Mulder." She walked ahead as he juggled the bright toys to keep from dropping them. "Hey, Mulder, they've got a Galaga video game in here!" "Galaga, Scully? You play Galaga?" "Oh, yeah. There was a little store near my apartment when I was in med school that had a Galaga machine. I used to play that thing nearly every day. I held high score on it most of the time." "My, my, you are full of surprises today, Dr. Scully." Scully was already exchanging money for tokens. "Come on Mulder!" She paused and looked around at him. "You do know how to play this, don't you?" He dropped the stuffed animals in front of the machine, stretched his arms and cracked his knuckles. "Do I know how to play Galaga?" he asked, grinning. "Hide and watch." Scully put the tokens in and the game commenced. Her first ship was killed in the second level. "High score holder, eh, Scully?" She shrugged and Mulder took over the controls. He lost his ship at the end of the first level. They looked at each other and burst out laughing. They each lost their remaining ships very quickly. "So much for putting my initials on this machine," sighed Scully. "I guess I didn't realize how long ago that really was." "Me either," said Mulder, picking up the toys. They walked out of the arcade into a cool twilight. "It's still early, Scully. How about some pizza and a movie?" "Sure, Mulder, that'd be nice," she said as she caught a falling blue teddy bear. "What are you going to do with all these stuffed animals?" "Oh, I don't know, maybe drop them by the children's ward at the hospital in the morning." "That's so sweet, Mulder." Mulder blushed a little. "Well, ah, I don't think I have enough room in my suitcase to take them home." Scully shook her head. "Get in the car, Mulder. I'm getting hungry." "Yes, Ma'am," he said, giving her a mock salute. She rolled her eyes and buckled herself in. "Just what movie did you have in mind, Mulder?" He cranked the car and turned to face her. "I was thinking Star Wars." "Why am I not surprised?" THE END This is my first attempt at fan-fic. Any feed back greatfully accepted! FrankieH@aol.com
