The Gathering Paul E Leone Part Two - Disclaimers in Part One Hamilton brought the car to a screeching halt just as the top two floors of the Holiday Inn exploded. The Quickening. "Scully..." "Noah, wait!" He was out of the car in a flesh. Scully was knocked to her feet by the Quickening. It tore apart the hallway, peeling paint off the walls. She could hear Cadwec screaming back there as the Quickening lifted him into the air. Duncan was dead.... No time to think! Run! Run! Run! "Scully?" Hamilton shouted in the confusion. Guests were running madly for the stairs. "SCULLY?" One of the people in the madness stopped suddenly at Hamilton's yell. Before he could move again, Krycek found himself being lifted in the air by Hamilton. "Where is she?" Krycek moaned. "I don't-" "Damn it!" Hamilton tossed him aside and continued down the hallway. Cadwec sighed as the Quickening finally ended. It was a rare experience, taking the head of such a powerful Immortal. This was his destiny! The Prize would be his! Not even the great Duncan MacLeod had been able to stop him. Next was that pitiful Scully. He'd make her suffer first, just to make MacLeod's sacrifice all the more pointless. What a fool...in a week, had MacLeod survived and gained more Quickenings, the Highlander might have beaten him. There were so few left to challenge him. Connor MacLeod would come soon, once he heard of his clansman's death. Methos was out there still. Sahve, the only female Immortal he even came close to respecting. Who else? A few others, perhaps, that were worthy of his attention. The rest were mere sheep...their Quickenings were like a candle flickering in the darkness. It was almost time...More than two thousand years of waiting were over. The Gathering was here, and he would be the one. Another Immortal was nearby. Amelia shook her head. Noah was being a fool! Have to be quick, catch up with him. Who killed Scully? How could such a young Immortal have such a powerful Quickening? Maybe Scully had won. Maybe she had killed Cadwec. Maybe not. Another Immortal approached. Cautiously, she pulled out her sword. "Noah?" A sword flashed in the darkness. "Scully?" Hamilton stared down the dark hallway. A body was lying on the floor, not far from their hotel room. "Saint Piran, no..." Wait...It was... MacLeod?? What the devil was MacLeod doing here? "You son of a bitch, you had to be the hero. Damn." The universe was conspiring against them. MacLeod was dead! Cadwec had killed MacLeod. It wasn't fair. Where was Scully? Scully tackled the other Immortal, barely ducking the attack. "Nein!" A flood of German swear words spilled from the woman beneath Scully. "Get *off*!" A kick sent Scully flying across the hall. "Ow!" She staggered to her feet and pulled out her rapier. "Who the hell are you? "Ich eise- I'm Amelia Von Ritterburg." "Dana Scully." "You're Scully?" Amelia smiled. No wonder Noah had adopted her. "Who are you?" "Old friend of Noah's. Who was the other?" "MacLeod." "You killed MacLeod?!" Amelia's sword sparkled as she slipped into an attack stance. "No! Cadwec!" Amelia swore again. "Cadwec is *here*?" "Yes! He killed Duncan!" "Noah...we have to find him!" "How do I know I can trust you?" "Schnell! We don't have time!" Amelia shouted, running down the hallway, the way Scully had just come from. Cadwec smiled as he stepped into the elevator, shoving aside a screaming old lady. This chaos was clearly the sign of bad breeding. That would change when he became god. The unfit, the weak, would be weeded out. It was his destiny. Scully followed Amelia down the dark hallway. This was insane! Keep running! Don't think! Just follow her. They both felt the other Immortal at the same moment. "Noah?" Amelia called out. "Noah?" "Millie? I told you to stay - Scully! Thank God!" Hamilton stumbled out of the darkness, carrying a sword under his arm. "Here. Take it." He handed the blade to Scully. Duncan's katana! "You deserve it. All his other students are dead," Hamilton whispered hoarsely. "Let's get the hell out of here before the police show up." Rochester Two nights had passed. Scully had killed four Immortals, all but one of them older than she was. Amelia took two heads, an Aztec warrior and a Greek who had been one of Socrates' students. Hamilton killed *eight*, their names and faces blurring together. Time was running out. The three of them, Cadwec, and perhaps a half dozen others were the only ones left in the area. By unspoken decision, the small gathering decided to split up, each Immortal heading in a different direction, to a different city. The Rochester police breathed a sigh of relief when the killings ended. None of the murders was ever solved. Across the country, in a dozen cities, similar events occurred. The weak, the slow, were being weeded out. The Gathering moved into the second stage. The pawns were off the board now. Buffalo "I'm sick of it..." Amelia whispered to Hamilton. "How many more will we have to kill before it's our turn?" "Shh...Millie, don't say that. We can beat this." "You and your silver tongue, Noah. Don't lie to me. I know I can't go on much longer. It's tearing me apart, inside and out. I almost died tonight." "What?!" "I was fighting...what was his name...a Korean. I slipped. If the poor fool hadn't been cocky, just for a *second*, I'd be dead." Hamilton stared at Amelia, his face made even paler by the moonlight. "But you beat him." "I didn't, Noah. He was an idiot. Any other Immortal would have taken my head." "God damn it, Millie! What do you want me to say?! For Christ's sake, don't you know what you're doing to me when you say that?" "You have to accept it, Noah. I won't last much longer." She smiled. "Well what the bloody 'ell do you want me to do?" Hamilton shouted angrily. "I've got a few ideas." "You're out of your mind! Now isn't the time-" "How many other times will we have?" Scully stared up at the ceiling of her hotel room. It was the end of June. She wouldn't live to see her thirty fifth birthday. She was Immortal, but she wouldn't reach thirty five, and in the room next to her, a man two hundred years old was making love to a seven hundred year old woman. It was just the kind of insane joke that Mulder would have appreciated. Don't think about him... Why not? I've been not thinking about him for two years, and it's made me go crazy inside. I have to come to terms with this. But it's my fault... No. It's not my fault. Cassandra killed Mulder. I did the best I could possibly have done. Mulder would understand. He wouldn't want me to burn up. He wouldn't. He'd want me to do my damn best and fight until the end, no matter who it was. Mulder had never given up his faith, in Samantha's return, in alien life...in her...not even in the moment he died. How could she do any less? Scully slept, at last untroubled by nightmares. After two years, she didn't see that scene... The next morning, Hamilton smiled over breakfast in the restaurant downstairs. "I've got an idea." "What?" "We should go see Niagara Falls, go shopping, and eat at a really good restaurant tonight. It's time we stopped dying and got on with our lives." Scully stared at him and shook her head, but smiled. "Why not." Amelia laughed. "I'll go shopping, but only if you pay, Noah." "The day's on me," he replied, kissing her hand. "My lady." The trio stared at the Falls from the ledge. "It's disgusting. Look at the casinos. A souvenir stand? Mein Gutt. It wasn't like this in the old days," Amelia said, shaking her head sadly. Scully idly wondered just how old the 'old days' were to her. A hundred years ago? Two hundred? Three hundred? "Progress, Millie," Hamilton replied sarcastically. "A waterfall doesn't make money on its own." Amelia swore under her breath and left the railing. Hamilton followed her. "I'm sorry this isn't turning out very romantic. Do you still want to go shopping?" "Don't be so glum, Noah. It's not your fault they ruined this place." She smiled and kissed him. "Now let's see what the latest fashion at The Gap." "Ooo, Millie, you know what I like," Hamilton laughed. "You two go ahead. I'm gonna stay a while longer," Scully said. "Okay. Meet you back at the hotel at five?" Scully nodded, watching the Falls as they left. Amelia was right. Even in the twenty years since the Scully family had visited here, the Falls had changed. Stores and restaurants and garbage and tours and casinos had taken over. Guess that a Wonder of the World didn't have a big enough profit margin. It needed to be *developed*. If Melissa were here - "Oh my God..." A hand tapped Scully on the shoulder. She turned around. What now - Oh my God... "Dana?" Melissa Scully whispered in shock. "I...I'm not -" Liar! Liar! How can you say that to Missy? "I'm sorry. I don't know, I just thought..." Melissa closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead. "You looked like someone. I'm sorry." "Are you okay?" "Yes!" Melissa snapped. "I'm fine!" Missy never lost her temper before... "I've just got a headache. I don't know why I even came here." Melissa laughed, weakly. "I better go." Don't...Please, don't go. "Missy, wait!" Melissa turned in surprise. "Dana...it *is* you! I don't understand! I can't believe it! You died! Everyone...I'm so happy to see you!" She hugged Scully. "Where have you been?" "It's a long story, Missy. I'll tell you when we get back to the hotel." "Hey, I just remembered, I have something I need to get!" Hamilton said, stopping in the middle of the walkway. "Noah! What?" "A knife! I'll meet you in the car, Millie. Here." He pressed the keys into her hand, kissed her, and dashed off. "Hurry up!" Amelia called after him, shaking her head. The man never changed. Scully shut and locked the hotel room door. "Missy, what are you doing here?" "What are *you* doing here!" "You're right. I owe you an explanation." Where to start? What to say? How to say it? Hamilton flipped the knife between and around his fingers, so fast that it appeared only as a silvery blur. Might not be a bad thing to have this up my sleeve. "Okay. I'll take it." "Immortal?" Melissa asked, a strange smile on her face. She squinted at Dana, then gasped in pain. "Missy! Are you okay?" "I'm fine. Dana, this is incredible. This story, it's almost unbelievable." "You don't believe me," Scully said flatly. "No! That's not it at all! I believe you! You're my sister, Dana. I just never imagine you'd never die." "Bruckman was right..." "What?" "No. That's the thing, Missy. I will die. It's almost the end, I can feel it." "Dana, no! You can't let the despair consume you! Don't turn to darkness and defeat. Scully smiled. Melissa hadn't changed. "It's so hard, Missy. It's just incredibly hard. No matter how many different scenarios I run through my head, it always ends up the same. Without a miracle, I'll die." "I know you won't believe me, but I know in my heart that you're wrong. You're the one, Dana. I can feel it." Scully shook her head. Missy was just too optimistic. *She* hadn't fought Cadwec. Amelia descended into the parking lot. I hope Noah doesn't take too long. Another Immortal! Noah? Maybe...Her sword sparkled as she drew it. The bags of clothes fell to the ground, useless now. She'd never get to wear that vest. It was time. The lights in the malls flickered once, then died, showering sparks on screaming customers. "Millie..." The Quickening tickled the edge of Noah's perception, gently caressing his mind, then snapped away. He broke into a run and pushed his way through the useless, confused crowds of people. Scully stared out the window of the Sheraton at the ambulance. Its lights were flashing as it tore into the parking lot. Probably some poor shopper had a heart attack eating a Big Mac. "Wonder when Noah and Amelia..." No. It wasn't possible. No Immortal would kill in such a public place. It was just a coincidence. Still, they had been gone a long time. No. No. No. She shook her head and turned back to Melissa. "Missy?" Her sister was asleep on the bed. A headache. "I wish you were Immortal, so you wouldn't have to worry about headaches." That's sick. I wouldn't wish this nightmare on anybody. Hard to believe that in the space of a week and a half, everything had turned into a nightmare. The Gathering was at hand. Who knows how many of her kind were left. A dozen? Ten? Six? Not many. In another day or two, it would all be over. Far across the city, two Immortals faced each other in an empty hockey rink. Blood had been spilt freely on the ice. In a flash, the battle was over. Cadwec stared at the fallen Immortal. He smiled grimly. "I never liked the Japanese. Yellow faced, squinty eyed creatures. Insane religions, barbaric customs, incredibly vile food...But they have one redeeming quality. Craftsmanship. No sword on Earth can equal a katana in form or function." He shifted the katana around in his hand, admiring the razor sharp blade and the delicately etched hilt, of some kind of blue coral stone. "A Muramasa katana! This is a rare artifact, my friend. I'd kill for one of these. I *will* kill for one of these." "Don't be so sure of yourself, Cadwec. That blade has a habit of betraying an evil master." Cadwec rolled his eyes. Superstitions. He would have expected better from Methos. Five thousand years, and he still hadn't outgrown those barbaric ideas. "There can be only one." There was just something ironic about beheading an Immortal with their own sword. It was fitting, Cadwec realized as the Quickening rushed through him. Hamilton fumbled with the keys and finally broke open the door. "Scully? We have to leave," he muttered wearily, barely having the strength to stay on his feet. "Now...Who the 'ell are you?" "Dana!" Melissa screamed, taking a step away from Noah. "Dana!" Scully appeared from the bathroom, sword in hand. "Noah! Where's..." "We have to go," Hamilton repeated, shaking his head. "Pack what you need." He turned to Melissa. "Whoever you are, go away. You don't want to be here for the rest of this." Melissa just stared at the man. His eyes..."What happened?" "What? In Saint Piran's name, we don't have much time!" he yelled. "Dana, move it! This isn't some bloody joke!" "You don't have to yell," Melissa said angrily. "What's going on?" "Amelia is dead, Dana. That son of a bitch killed her." "Oh, God! Noah, I'm..." "Pack your things. He'll be here soon," Hamilton said, cutting her off. "This isn't the place for it." Cadwec flipped through the afternoon paper, a slight frown on his face. Von Ritterburg was dead. Another Immortal had killed her. Sahve, most likely. MacLeod knew Von Ritterburg, too well to kill her. That was hardly fair. He had anticipated killing her himself, just to provoke Hamilton into fighting him. Hamilton would be a challenge, just as much as MacLeod had been. Well, some things couldn't be helped. It was a small price to pay for a Muramasa katana. And Methos' Quickening. It was incredible! How many heads had the First Immortal taken over those long centuries? More than Cadwec could even begin to imagine. The memories of the lifetimes of a thousand Immortals all blurred together in his mind. None of that was comforting when compared to how he had been robbed of Von Ritterburg's Quickening. But, after all, Hamilton was still alive. Would Connor MacLeod or Sahve kill him? Doubtful. Still, it would be better to be safe than sorry. Those two would die, then Hamilton's latest protg, then Hamilton. Then Cadwec would be God on Earth. It was his destiny. Later... Hamilton put on his coat. "It's time. I'm going to find Cadwec and end this once and for all." "Noah, you can't! He'll kill you!" Scully protested, moving to block the door. "He killed Duncan!" "I'm not MacLeod. Move, please..." "No! This is insa-uhh!" She fell to the floor with a groan. Hamilton slipped the sword back into his coat. "When she wakes up, keep her here," he whispered to Melissa. "Don't open the door for anybody, not even me." Cadwec's Quickening. It could overpower me. I could become just like him. "You don't think you're coming back." It wasn't a question, and Hamilton didn't answer. Just shrugged and slipped out the door. "Cadwec!" Hamilton shouted in the empty parking lot. "CADWEC! Face me, you son of a bitch!" "Hamilton." "You aren't Cadwec," Hamilton hissed, pulling out his sword and slowly turning around. "Sorry to disappoint," the other Immortal replied, shrugging. "Sahve." What do I know about her? Lappish. At least seventeen hundred years old. That makes her lucky or very, very good. Darius taught her, when he was still a warrior. Scratch lucky. She must be good. "You killed Amelia." "Sorry. But there can be only one!" Dana woke up, groaning. Her head hurt. What happened? Noah! "Noah!" "Shh! Lie down, Dana. You took a nasty hit." "He knocked me out, that - I have to -" "Dana, no. This is his destiny. You don't have the right to interfere." "Don't tell me about destinies, Missy. I can't just let him die." Smiling, Melissa shook her head. "Sometimes you can't prevent death." Five Immortals left on Earth. Hamilton fought furiously, ignoring the few blows Sahve was able to get through. With a feral roar, he sliced her hand clean off. She was strong enough not to scream, just stared blankly at the bloody stump of her wrist. Then, somehow, she smiled as Hamilton brought his sword up again. "There can be only ONE!" Four Immortals left on Earth. Connor MacLeod closed his eyes and bowed his head. My bonny Heather... The sword flashed, mercifully ending his life. Three Immortals left on Earth. Hamilton pulled himself up as the Quickening died down. Where was Cadwec? That was all that mattered. Find Cadwec. Kill Cadwec. Then what? Kill Scully? It wasn't fair. "Missy, I have to go. It's *my* destiny." Melissa finally relented. "You'll survive. I just know you will." Scully smiled and hugged her sister. "See you soon." Cadwec paced around the end zone, finally resting against the yellow goal post. This was the perfect place to fight. A relic, the stadium had been empty since December, when the Bills played their last game in Buffalo. Changing times. What better place to end it then a relic of another era? Tonight would see the dawn of the Age of Cadwec. Hamilton slowly walked up the ramp to midfield. In the darkness, he could barely see ten feet away. There. In the end zone. "C A D W E C!" The scream echoed in the darkness like the cry of an avenging angel. Hamilton smiled as he approached Cadwec. Now it would all end. Scully pulled the Honda up to the doors of the stadium. Please, God, don't let me be too late. Please, please, please. "Hamilton." "Cadwec." Hamilton sneered at this pitiful, ugly man. He wanted to be ruler of the world? Not as long as he still breathed. "Tonight, you'll rest in Hell for what you've done." Cadwec smiled, his teeth bright in the darkness. "We'll see." The clang of sword on sword. Not too late! Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Hamilton is good, Cadwec had to admit. The first stirrings of doubt surfaced in his mind, then were quickly shoved aside. The battle was all. Scully emerged onto the field. Hamilton and Cadwec were near the ten yard line. It was too close a fight to call. Cadwec was quicker, but Hamilton was more powerful and his sword was able to keep Cadwec at bay. He only had to tire Cadwec out, batter his defenses down, and it would be over. For the first time in his life, Cadwec sweated in fear. Something had come over Hamilton. He was fighting better than MacLeod, either of them, had. This isn't the way it was meant to be! *I* am the One! I cannot be defeated! Hamilton smiled. Cadwec was on the run. Only a few more minutes, and it would be over. Only a miracle would save Cadwec now. Cadwec lunged forward, desperately, impaling Hamilton on the katana. "NO!" Scully screamed as Hamilton fell back, the katana doing even more damage on its way out. "Now, you can join your bitch in Hell," Cadwec sneered, raising the katana for the deathblow. There was a flash of silver, and pain exploded in Cadwec's stomach. A knife was embedded up to the hilt in his flesh. "Argh!" he screamed, tearing it out and falling backwards. Hamilton stumbled to his feet. Now or never, before you pass out from the pain. Cadwec stared in disbelief at Hamilton. He should be dead, yet he was walking, smiling! His wounds hadn't slowed Hamilton down at all. This wasn't fair. Cadwec sighed in defeat and flashed his katana in the air. Krycek smiled at the signal and raised the rifle. His finger tightened on the trigger. Hamilton grunted as the arrow - no, bullet not arrow - tore his lungs open. Sword...Can't drop the ... He fell to the turf, dead. "There can be only ONE!" Cadwec roared in triumph, raising the katana above Hamilton's head. Scully's eyes blurred over as she sprung forward, far, far too late. The Quickening blasted her to the ground and shot Cadwec ten feet into the air. Two Immortals left on Earth. Krycek stared at the light show. What the hell was going on? That crazy old man never said anything about *that*! The Quickening tore up the field. Huge scorch marks ran up and down the turf where the Quickening had howled in protest. Scully stared at Cadwec, standing next to Hamilton's body. It was all over now. Our Father, who art in Heaven... Cadwec sighed in joy. It was all but over. Only Hamilton's runt, the American woman, remained. It would be anticlimactic, but all great leaders must suffer to reach ultimate power. She wouldn't stand a chance. Scully finished her prayer and pulled out MacLeod's katana. At the least, she would make him proud, make Mulder proud, even in the last moment. "En garde," Cadwec sneered, pointing his katana at the young woman. "Now you join Hamilton." Krycek watched in fascination as Scully fought with Cadwec. She was pretty good, actually. But Cadwec was a genius with that sword. The fight wouldn't last long, it was obvious even to his untrained eyes. Scully was on the defensive from the first second. Cadwec launched dozen blows from each direction, so fast Scully couldn't even think. Instinct alone saved her. How long would she last? No! Don't think. Act. Her mind became a blur. Arms moved of their own will, blocking attacks she barely even saw coming. "Impressive..." Cadwec whispered. She was doing far better than he expected. Hamilton and MacLeod had taught her well. "You're almost a worthy opponent." He tired of toying with her and stepped back for the death blow. Scully shook her head. She was gasping for breath, and Cadwec hadn't even broken a sweat yet. Now or never. Cadwec pulled his katana up, smiling coldly. She tensed her muscles. Have to get him. Don't think... His muscles exploded into action. The katana shot out, a silvery blur, right toward her neck. Krycek smiled at the scene. Scully was toast. Just act! The two swords collided with a clang.... And Cadwec's katana shattered into a thousand pieces. "Son of a bitch," Krycek whispered, running down the stairs as fast as his feet would carry him. Scully was invincible! Scully and Cadwec both stared at the broken sword in shock. The baffled look on Cadwec's head was priceless. Then, smiling, Scully cut off Cadwec's head. "There can be only one." The skies shrieked in protest, and lightning bolts flew forth, striking Scully one after the other, lifting her into the air. The wind howled, bluish mists spinning around and around like a ghostly tornado centered on Scully. Voices screamed into her mind, as the souls of all the Immortals who had ever lived cried out in joy as they were, however briefly, set free. Then it was over. Scully was dropped to the devastated, blasted remains of the field as the wind and lightning died away. Epilogue Scully watched from the car as the stony faced FBI agents dragged off Cigarette Smoking Man and his cronies. They were going to spend a long time in a cold, dark jail for what they had done. Their conspiracies were over. The lies were over. Justice was served. That was one of the perks of being a demigod. Nobody could stop her from doing what was right. The truth, the truth that Mulder had searched for his whole life, was finally revealed. For good or bad, everything had changed. The repercussions would last a century, an eternity... But she would be there to see things right. First things first, though. It was time to pay Mom and Melissa a visit. Then maybe, just maybe, she'd stop by and see what Mulder was up to. That was another perk of being a demigod.... - The End - ************************************************************************** *********** Author's Notes: This one is alternate universe, too, but not part of my Faery Cycle.
