You can read the disclaimers in Part One of the original story which was published not that long ago. Same things still apply. I finished this story on August 17, 1997. Don't really know why I wrote it except I was in the mood for.....well, you'll see. This part is like....well PG13. One other thing. I am seriously considering ditching America On Line after all these years. I think I'll still have it for about two more weeks, if you want to send me feedback, for now it would probably be best to try sending to macspooky@earthlink.net. If this account works I am keeping it. If you want, cc Macspooky@aol.com. Epilogue to "Viva Las Vegas" by Macspooky Fox Mulder lay in bed with his wife listening to the sound of the rain beating against the roof of his house. It was a nice soft rhythmic sound. When it finally stopped his world would be a green and beautiful place filled with blue skies and colorful flowers. Dana dozed with her head against his shoulder as he gently rubbed the bulge that was now her abdomen. Moving to Seattle had been the best thing he had ever done. When he had been approached by the Group he hadn't considered their offer of a job seriously. Then he had met the man he would be working with and had found a kindred soul, another human being like himself who could see into the heart and mind of the dark ones. If Fox Mulder was spooky, well...he didn't hold a candle to his new partner in that department. The man could be at a crime scene and actually see things through the eyes of the victim. To his surprise, Dana had agreed instantly to leave the FBI and go to Seattle with him. Oddly enough, without the government bureaucracy, and using the sources that the Group had to offer, he was freer to pursue his work than he had ever been before. Working as a consultant in forensics, Dana would be much better able to manage her hours around the baby, and she liked what she was doing and the people she now worked with too. She stirred beside him as he felt the tightening in her abdomen. "Oof..." she muttered. "Fifteen minutes since the last one," he said. "Are you sure it isn't time to go?" "Not yet....five minutes...." she closed her eyes again and savored her husband's loving touch. It was amusing the way he had forgotten everything that had been said in the classes that they had attended. He was a little nervous about this whole process. The rain was slowing, he realized. Maybe it would stop by the time they had to leave for the hospital. He had moved in with Dana the day they had had their little talk on the park bench. That night, he had lain beside her in her queen sized bed and had fallen in love with her all over again. Beyond that, however, he had fallen in love with the tiny creature that he had so inadvertently put inside of her. It hadn't always been easy. She had had a lot of nausea the first few months. There had been worries about the cancer recurring. There had been adjustments to make in living together, but they had gotten over every obstacle and now they were here in there own home waiting for their baby to be born. His lips curled up slightly as he held her. The sex had sure been good and there had been plenty of it. Best of all though, the hard bitter Scully that had existed during the last year of their partnership had been replaced by the Dana that he used to know. She had blossomed. He had realized as the months had past that what Dana had needed all along was love, his love, and he gave it to her gladly. In return she brought him joy and the first real happiness he had known since he was a child. He felt her abdomen stiffen again. "Ouch..." she said this time. "Hey, that wasn't 15 minutes....." "No....that was five," he said. "Well, let's see when the next one comes. Seems to me we missed 10 somewhere in between." She struggled to sit up muttering about how it wasn't easy being a blimp. He laughed and told her that she was a beautiful blimp and besides, she wouldn't be one for much longer. Then he watched as she headed for the bathroom. A few moments later she came out looking somewhat pale. "Um...Fox....there has been a change of plans. It's time to go," she said with quiet assurance. "I think your progeny is going to make an appearance sooner than expected." He just stood there suddenly forgetting everything he was supposed to do. She smiled at him. "Hey, G Man....not to worry....I'm a doctor...remember? Get your ass in gear and let's go....." God, how she loved this man! He was totally nuts, and totally wonderful. She thanked God every minute for the unexpected pregnancy that had forced their hand. That first night together, she had been embarrassed about the way she had acted in Las Vegas, but he had laughed and told her that he had never had such a good time in his life, and then he had loved her as she had never been loved before. "Oh...yeah...ass...gear....um...." he spluttered. "Car keys...." she suggested...."or would you like me to drive?" "No....I can do this....I can...yeah....." "Yeah, right. At this moment Fox Mulder, you look about as useless as the night you stood in that hotel room staring at the Reverend Tool dressed only in that dayglow pink condom." She laughed out loud remembering their "honeymoon," the one that had gotten her into her current predicament. Remembering how much he loved her, he put his arms around her and inhaled the scent of her hair. "I wasn't totally useless that night. As I recall, you enjoyed it a great deal. I think you even enjoyed blowing Elvis' head off. You feel good in my arms," he said softly. "Hey, Babe....got time for a quickie?" "Remember, Mulder, some babies are born with teeth," she laughed causing him to do the same. Suddenly, his ass was in gear and he remembered everything that he was supposed to do....more or less. Several Hours Later Fox Mulder sat in the hospital and watched his wife sleep. He congratulated himself. He had gotten her to the hospital on time and had only put one dent in the fender of their car when he had backed into the garage wall instead of putting it in drive. That wasn't too bad. He had held her hand and rubbed her back through the entire labor and she had only had to yell at him once when he had looked at the monitor that was attached to her and informed her that the next contraction was going to be a humdinger. Well, he kind of saw her point. She really didn't need to know ahead of time. I mean it wasn't as though she hadn't found out 10 second later that it was going to be very painful indeed. She had only thrown him out for a moment. After that he had stopped watching the monitor strapped to her belly and started paying plenty of attention to her instead. Samantha Melissa Mulder had made her entrance into the world an hour later.....a beautiful perfect baby girl, 5 1/2 lbs. of red headed fury....screaming at the indignity of being pushed into the cold air and bright light. The nurses said she was a sunnyside up baby. She'd been born facing the ceiling. Dana had informed them through tears of joy that she was going to be contrary just like her daddy. When they finally placed her in his arms, he had cried. She was the picture of her mother which was what he had wanted all along although he wouldn't have cared what she looked like so long as she was healthy. He hadn't quite believed it was possible to fall in love with someone so instantaneously. His baby....his daughter....his precious claim to immortality. He hadn't wanted to let her go. Finally, after watching Dana for awhile, he could not resist the temptation to lift his baby daughter from her bassinet. He was ever so gentle, careful not to wake her. He sat in the rocking chair with her and felt this overwhelming desire to count fingers and toes but he couldn't see any. Very carefully he folded back the sleeve of her kimono. Five little fingers. Then he did the other. He wondered if she would freeze to death if he unwrapped the blanket and looked at her little feet. She stirred in his arms and he clutched her tightly. He heard the lilt of laughter from the doorway and looked up. There at the entrance to the private room stood a slender dark haired woman. She was very beautiful. He felt immediately that there was something special about her. "Now they are hardy little creatures and she'll not break," said the woman. He realized that she had a lilt to her voice that was foreign. She came into the room as he got to his feet. "I'm Mary Therese Maguire. I'm your nanny." "You are?" he asked dumbly. Dana said she had a surprise for him, but she hadn't said anything about a nanny. "You are Fox Mulder are you not? You certainly look like your pictures." "I'm Fox Mulder." "Tis a fine name," she smiled. Then she pulled up another chair and indicated that he should sit and taking the child with competent hands began to unwrap her. "The da's are always nervous," she smiled. "See....10 fingers....10 toes....and a belly button that will be as cute as can be when that ugly piece of plastic falls off." "It's um not cute now," he replied puzzled by the woman who rewrapped the infant and then pulled off the cap. "Red hair like her mam's...." she smiled. "A real little Celt. In Ireland of course no one would notice." "Um...of course...." He wanted to ask her questions about herself. To his astonishment though, she was looking at the infant with utter love. He watched silently. He supposed that Dana had hired her when she had gone to Europe on a consult a few months ago. It had been the one really big fight they had had. He had not wanted her to go in her condition. He had forbade it which had been a tremendous mistake because she had dug in her heels. He had spent two nights in a motel before they had finally made up. "I was found roaming the streets of Dublin when I was about 8 years old," she said quietly. "I had no memories. I spoke with an American accent but no one could find my family. I had no fingerprints you see. I was placed with a wonderful family who adopted me." The woman got up and put the infant back in her bassinet. "Mam & Da didn't want me to search for my family. They were older you see and couldn't have children. I think they were afraid they would lose me as if that were possible, as if I could have done that to them." She smiled. "Last year Da passed and six months ago my mother followed. I put out an inquiry on the Internet. There were a few answers, but nothing substantial until your lovely wife showed up at my cottage door." "What?" he whispered. He too got to his feet and stepped closer to her. "She told me that if we pursued any connection that it could be dangerous for me, but I didn't care. I'd always collected fox you see....photos....little statues...I always knew somehow the fox was special to me. Your wife took some samples....blood, hair...." the woman was whispering now. "And it proved that I was your little sister....." Before he could say anything, she put her finger to her mouth. "Tis better for now if I remain Mary Therese Maguire, your new nanny. Dr. Mulder said so. I believe her. I have strange dreams sometimes, frightening ones really. I truly am a nanny you see....certified....and your wife was able to get me a green card. I can't have wee ones of my own so instead I look after others....." He swallowed. His heart was racing and his stomach felt as though it had hit the floor. Samantha.....after all these years.....after all the searching.....but it was her. He knew it was her. He wanted to pull her into his arms and hold her and never let her go again even though he knew she was right....it was best she remained who she was now. Still he might have done it except in that moment a piercing wail echoed through the room. Well, it wasn't that loud really, but to him it was. Samantha.....no Mary Therese smiled as Dana's eyes snapped open. Ignoring him, the young dark haired woman picked up the infant and as Dana raised the bed brought her the baby and helped settle the infant at Dana's breast. He watched in silence. This was a woman's thing, something he could have no real part in it. "It was kind of you to have Katherine pick me up at the airport," said Mary with a smile. "I set my bags inside the door and we came right here." "I'm sorry that I couldn't be there myself, Mary," smiled Dana. "Katherine asked me to tell you that she will be in to see you later.....When she told me you'd gone to the hospital I insisted she bring me right away. "That's perfect then," said Dana. "My husband can drive you home and help you get settled....." She held up her free hand as Fox started to protest. "No, Fox. I'm fine here with the baby. You go on home and get Mary settled, and you can come back later." He nodded eagerly. He wanted to stay with her but on the other hand he couldn't wait to get home and talk with their new nanny. The world was suddenly spinning very quickly. "I love you Dana Katherine Scully," he said bending down and kissing her cheek. And you too Samantha..." He touched his baby daughter's cheek as she nursed. "I love you too, Fox Mulder," Dana said. She smiled. He was already walking out the door. "I really think you'll like Seattle a lot Sa.....Mary Therese. There is so much to see and do. Dana's mother is coming tomorrow and then when Dana is recovered, we are all going to fly back east and visit with my mother........" The End
