Fri Dec 1 22:23:40 1995 Ok, out of the black abyss, which I call my mind, I have written this little story. I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know your thoughts and feelings. Thanks to DiRisha for her help and support in putting this story together! :) As always, Mulder, Scully, Skinner and the lovable LoneGunmen are the property of Chris Carter and the gang at Twentieth Century Fox. Double Vision 2/2 by Carol Jenner (Agnt CJ@aol.com) Frohike thought a moment and said, "It's ok Langley we can tell him. We are with an agency with the defense department, we are doing routine follow-up on your involvement in project Beetle." "Project Beetle, I was never on any project Beetle. Who are you." "Project Beetle..oh that's right the confidentiality thing. Listen, we are one of you. My name really is Johnson and this is Langston, or Langley for short. Look, according to our records you were the chief pathologist assigned to project Beetle." "I don't know of any such project." Jaekle had lowered the gun, satisfied that they were a part of the whole organization. "Sure you do, it says so on our report," said Langley. He thought he saw where Frohike was going with it. "It's the one involving a certain FBI agent." "That's project Beetle. I didn't realize it had a name and a section number. I thought it was a private project." "Private project for who?" Frohike took out a pen and notebook, "I believe accounting will want to know about this. Who is in charge again?" "I don't know some CIA guy, smokes a lot of cigarettes. He paid me and this technician, Oliver Selif to do a special project for him. Look I don't want any trouble. I'll take you to the Agent, I mean, he's at MedTek." "That's okay, I would like the element of surprise. Misappropriations of government facilities and funds is a crime. Something of which I have a personal interest in." Frohike and Langley started leaving. "By the way, it would not go well for you if you were to tell anyone about this. I suggest you take a vacation or something, and we'll make sure the IRS isn't aware of your extra-curricular financial activities, if you know what I mean." "Yeah I know what you mean." The two men left the apartment, and Jaekle slumped into a chair wondering why he ever agreed to this special project. CHAPTER SEVEN Dana couldn't sleep. It was about 5:00 so she called the LGM anyway. They decided to meet around 7:00. "Are you sure this is going to work," quizzed Dana. They had put a small micro-transmitter behind her right ear. The casual observer would notice it as a mole, but it was covered by her hair so no one would probably even question it. "Yes don't touch it," warned Langley. "It feels funny." "Of course it does. Don't mess with it. Forget about it," suggest Langley. "Dana, we talked with Jaekle last night. Do you know of any of Mulder's enemies that smokes a lot of Cigarettes?" Dana whirled around, "What?" "According to Jaekle," said Langley behind her, "a man that smokes a lot of cigarettes paid him and a technician named Silef to do a special project, involving Mulder at MedTek." "Oh, my god. Mulder called him Cancer Man. He always felt that this man was behind everything. In fact, he is the consortium's dog." "Oh, no," moaned Frohike. "That would mean they are trying to kill him, again. Dana, you have to get going. Before it is too late." Dana, and the LGM parked in a non-descript white van, outside of MedTek's main office. "Ok, Dana, don't worry we are going to keep track of you. If you don't come out of MedTek in a few hours, we will call for the cavalry," assured Langley. "Now, do you remember how you were going to get in," asked Bryers. The LGM had managed to get her a pass and security clearance for MedTek. "Remember to look for a technician Oliver Silef, he's the other one on this project," said Frohike. Dana said, "it's ok guys. I'll get him out. Do you have my medical bag over there?" Bryers held it up, Dana prayed she wouldn't need it. "Ok, wish me luck." Dana got out of the van and walked into the main entrance. She showed the guard her badge and he let her through. She looked up Silef in the building directory and went to his office. He was nowhere to be found. She went in and quietly started peekin g through his things. "May I help you with something," ask a man in his mid twenties, with glass, brown hair and a lanky frame. "Are you Oliver Silef?" "I am who is asking?" Silef went over to his desk to make sure his 'filing system' wasn't disturbed. "I am Dr. Dana Scully, I believe we have an acquaintance." Silef went white as a ghost. That FBI man Mulder would scream her name, he had no idea the person existed. "Dr. Silef are you all right?" "It's mister and close the door I am so glad you're here." Dana went over and quickly closed the door. "Are you here about Mulder?" "Yes, do you know where he is," she tried to remain calm and not get too excited. He must be alive and she was steps away of seeing him again. "Yes, he is in need of serious medical attention. But the project leader won't let me get him a doctor, in fact, the idea is to kill the man. I can't do it. Not like this, no human should suffer the way he is suffering." "I will take him out of here, but I need to know what are you giving him." "Experimental drugs. Different kinds, some I didn't even know existed. Some produce seizures and he is running a high fever all the time. He hallucinates and is delusional. In my opinion he is on his way to complete psychosis, unless his body finally gives out." Dana was horrified, it's one thing to kill a man but to torture him to do it was another thing. "Take me to him, now," she demanded. Dana and Silef went down a series of corridor, it was a complete maze, she never would have found him. They stopped at a window that looked into a room. Dana put her hand on the glass and whispered, "my god." "I told you he was not good." "You are going to have to help me get him out of here, I can't carry him." "Why don't you go see him first," suggest Silef, who unlocked the door. Dana rushed into the room. "Mulder, Mulder can you hear me?" Mulder moaned. "Mulder I have come to get you out of here." She stood up to saying something to Silef, but quickly shut the door and locked it. "Hey what are you doing! We have to get some help!" As she was screaming Cancer Man stepped into the window. "Excellent Silef, I'll see to it you get a promotion out of this. Start the same treatments for Ms. Scully here, double Mulder's dosage." "Yes, sir," he said, smiling about his promotion. Finally he said, I'll have some respect. Scully bent down and touched Mulder, "Oh, Mulder your burning up. You have to hang on." Mulder's eyes opened, "Scully? He tried to move his arm to touch her but he could barely lift it off the mat. She grabbed it and put his hand on her face. "I'm right here, you have to hang on." "She's not moving," said Frohike. "We have to go in there." "Give her a few more minutes, she's probably hiding," assured Breyers, "she's only been in there a half hour, that place must be a maze." "I don't care, I'm calling Skinner," declared Frohike. His Dana was in trouble, he just knew it. CHAPTER EIGHT "Mulder, come on get up," urged Dana. she had hoped that if she got him moving he would feel better. But he wouldn't move. He weighed a ton, his whole body was limp. "Don't you leave me." Mulder thought he was dreaming. Scully came to him, she finally came. He had been there for about five days but it could have been five years to him, he had no sense of time left. He tried to remember when the last time her saw her, "Scully" "I'm right here Mulder, come one, wake up!" She tugged and pulled but he wasn't responding. He was barely breathing. "Oh God Mulder I have mourned you twice already do I have to do it for real this time?" She started to cry, a little. Mulder had slipped in unconsciousness. Skinner knew what Scully was up to, and while he kind of had an idea Mulder had his own information source he was happy to finally see they were real and not little green men, as Skinner once joked to himself. "How long has she been in there," he asked with the authority of an FBI man. "About an hour, we know exactly where she is, but how are we going to get in there to them," asked Frohike. "This does create a problem. We can't very well walk up and ask for our agents back. You know that she is in there?" "Proof positive," Langley showed Skinner the radar device. "Isn't there some kind of rule that you can go in if you think your agents are in danger," asked Frohike. "I suppose a case could be built on that, but keep in mind, Mulder is technically dead and buried as of 1:00 this afternoon. How do you expect me to explain to a federal court judge why I need a search warrant. It will take time, and the cost..." "But they are your agents," protested Frohike, "we have to do something. If Mulder is alive and Scully is there, then we have to do something." Breyers put his hand on Frohike's shoulder to calm him down. He understood how the little man was feeling but it would not help Dana or Mulder. "I have an idea," said Breyers. "I'll get two more passes, you and I will go in posing as doctors, and get them out. Hopefully we won't be too late." "How do you plan on getting these passes?" "Leave that to me," said Langley burst with pride, "It will take about an hour." Cancer smoking man was outside the window looking at Scully tiresomely try to get Mulder to wake up or move. He was pleased with the results, even if Agent Mulder should live this drug definitely had advantages. Silef came down the hall holding a tray of food, drugged of course, "Ok, all set." "Give her some more time with him. I don't think he has much longer to live anyway. Look at him." Selif was getting pains of guilt again. Was a promotion worth this. Oliver couldn't decide what he was more scared of, burning in hell for all of this or having to deal with the consequences of this smoking Bastard. Selif opened the slot in the door and slide the food in. "Here eat something." Dana saw it and went over to it. She figured that maybe if Mulder ate something it would help, he was looking a bit emaciated. She took the tray and went back to the floor. As she lifted the tray she noticed a note that said, DON'T EAT, DRUGGED. She put the plate back on the tray. She knew that smoking man and Selif were watching here, waiting for her to eat. She took a small bit and then pretended to chew. Then she coughed the morsel right into her hand, which she wiped on Mulder. She gave some of the water to Mulder, hoping that it would do more good than harm. "How long before the drug starts to take effect," asked CSM. "Well at the rate she's eating about two days. Mulder on the other hand will be dead in an hour." "How touching, she's hoping to help him by feeding him, but in fact, she's killing him. Call me when he's dead. I'll be in my car, having a cigarette." Scully remembered something she completely forgot. Oh good Dana, she chastised herself, what kind of FBI agent would forget they are wearing a gun. Selif either forgot, didn't know or was really a double agent, Dana was unsure. She feigned scratching her side to double check she still had a gun. Good it's there, just remember it when the time comes. CHAPTER NINE Breyers and Skinner walked into MedTek's main door. Showed their passes to the guard. The guard, which was a different one than when Scully went through, eyed them suspiciously. "Who is that you are going to see," asked the guard. "An Oliver Selif, he's a technician. He called me this morning, this is my associate. I am trying to kill two birds with one stone, if you know what I mean." "Is he expecting you?" Uh-oh thought Skinner. "No he isn't," replied Breyers, "He called me about a medical condition, I thought I would pop over and follow-up." Skinner was getting nervous, "Ah, Dr, why don't we just go, you can introduce me to your friend another time." "Ok, you can pass," said the guard, who was satisfied for now. Breyers and Skinner tried to find Scully by using a newly rigged compass. They hoped to find her, the place was a maze. After walking around for almost an hour, Skinner stopped. "This is ridiculous, we must have passed this same office five times already. " "I know I was thinking the same thing. We can't stop looking." Breyers walked down a different hallway, and stopped. He ran to the corner and waved for Skinner to come on. "What is it?" said Skinner. "Look." Breyers pointed to the glass. They had finally found them. Skinner went over and unlocked the door. Scully noticed the door was unlocking and quickly went over to the wall and pulled her gun. It's now or never Dana said to herself. Skinner walked in and started staring at Mulder. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. Breyers decided to say outside the door as a look out. "Hold it right there," he had her gun at the base of his neck, "Put your hands up. Oliver Silef decided that he had enough of this business and was trying to get out as fast as he could. Unfortunately for him he parked by the front door this morning and he had to walk by the nosy guard. "Mr. Silef, leaving for the day?" "Ah yeah, thought I would go home for a bit. Good night," Silef didn't even make eye contact. "Did your two friends catch up with you?" "Excuse me, my two guests, I wasn't expecting anybody?" Silef was visibly shaken he new that the project leader had friends who could make him disappear. "Yeah there were two gentlemen that came to see you. One of them said they were a doctor and you called him and decided to do a follow-up. He said you were expecting them." "Oh yes, yes now I remember. Well, I guess I won't be going home after all. I bet they are in my office, I will see if I can catch them." "Shall I notify security to be on the look out?" "No, no. I don't think that will be necessary. I am sure we just missed each other." Silef was laughing causally. But the guard definitely wasn't amused by this. What does he take me for an idiot, thought the guard, and he notified security to be on the look out for two men, one in his mid 40's, glasses and balding, the other, lanky, with blond hair and a beard. "Agent Scully, I am here to get you and Mulder out." Skinner was tense. He had no way of knowing if she were on any drugs or not. He didn't want to provoke her. "Why should I believe you. Mulder had a double." "Do you remember what I told you at the Lincoln Memorial?" "You tell me," she nudged the gun harder into his neck. "I said I was your friend and not to go it alone and for you to call if you needed help." Scully uncocked her gun. "Sorry Sir. We need to get Mulder out of here." "Agreed. Can he walk?" Just then the building alarms sounded. "I don't think we have the time to find out," yelled Breyers, who was listening to their conversation, "Grab him and let's go!" Skinner went over and with the help of Scully slung Mulder over his right shoulder. Breyers had some idea of how to get out and he led the party down through the halls. As they turned one of many corners Breyers slammed into Silef. Silef fell to the floor stunned, and Scully trained her gun on him. "Get up," she demanded. "I can help. I...I..wi..will help. Follow me." Silef brushed Scully's gun to the side and started down a different corridor than the one they were headed on. At the end there was a fire emergency exit. Scully though they were almost home free when they heard from behind, "Freeze or we'll shoot!" Scully, with her gun already in her hand, whipped around and fired two warning shots. "Get Mulder out of here," she commanded. Breyers opened up the fire door and that started another alarm. "Come on Scully," he yelled. Skinner, with Mulder over his shoulder flew through the door. Breyers pulled Silef out. Scully fired another barrage of bullets and ducked the door before they could return fire. "There they are," yelled Frohike, who spied them coming out of a side door. Langley jumped into the drivers seat and crashed the guard gate. Frohike opened the side door to the van. Skinner literally threw Mulder in, Breyers pushed Silef in and once they were all in, Langley peeled out of there. Because of the jostling of the van, Frohike crawled over to the his friend Mulder. "He doesn't look too good," Scully ignored him and started pulling out medical instruments. She knew there was much she could do for him, but had to do something. Silef looked at Skinner, "What's going to happen to me?" "Well that depends. What can you tell us about your special project." "Offer me protection and I'll give you names and dates." CHAPTER TEN "Oh, your back," said the admitting clerk of Georgetown Medical Center. "Here fill out these forms." Scully went back into the waiting area and sat down next to Frohike, who volunteered to stay with her. Breyers and Langley went back to LGM headquarters, saying hospitals made them nervous. Skinner took Silef into protective custody and hopefully get answers that they needed. "They are going to think I'm nuts," she said. "Why?" "As far as they are concerned Fox Mulder had died three days ago, remember?" "Tell them he's Sam Johnson," suggested Frohike. She knew Mulder still could die but at least he would have a chance to live as long as he was here. Dana smiled at Frohike's suggestion, after all that had happened it was the funniest thing she had heard in a long time. Scully fell asleep on Frohike's shoulder, and Frohike fell asleep with his head against the wall. "Agent Scully? Agent Scully!" Scully woke up to a young man shaking her shoulder. "Yes what is it?" She bumped Frohike to wake up, he just snored. "I'll take you to see your friend now." He was a nurse sent down by the doctor. Scully started grabbing her things and yelled to Frohike to wake up, "They're going to let us see Mulder now." Frohike barely woke up but was soon tagging along behind Scully and the nurse. "Can you tell us anything," Dana inquired, trying to make idle conversation and to get some information, as they stepped on the elevator. "Well I can tell you he's not good, but we are pretty confident he'll pull thorough. When he is lucid, he asks for you. The doctor will explain everything." They stepped off the elevator and walked into ICU. The Nurse led them down the many bays that were there to Mulder, who was at the end. Scully thought he was looking much better, especially since he was cleaned up, but his fever hadn't gone down any. "Mulder, it's me. Scully. Dana Scully." She put her hands on his arm and squeezed to let him know that she was there. Fortunately he was breathing on his own, but he had several IV's running into him, and while he was hot to touch he had ice packs surrounding him. "He can't hear you," Dana looked up and saw a fortyish man. "I'm Dr. Valentro, I believe we met the first time Mr. Mulder came in here." Scully was shocked and panicked. He worked for MedTek, he could finish the job. Frohike definitely remembered the name and blurted out, "Don't you work for MedTek?" Valentro bristled, "Yes, I do. I understand what you must be thinking. Please I am trying to help. Consider Mr. Mulder fortunate." "Fortunate," exclaimed Scully, "You bastards tried to kill him." "Dr. Scully. It's not what you think. I, as I am ashamed to admit, help develop several of the drugs used on him. So I know what they can do and how to counteract it. Otherwise another doctor would probably be baffled and give up." He went over and check Mulder's pupils. "I'm sorry," she sighed. "You must be exhausted. Especially after today's escapades," Valentro smiled, "I have instructed the night staff to let you two stay as long as you want." Valentro waved outside the curtain. Scully became defensive. Just then two orderlies pushed two chairs in. "Try to get some sleep. Mulder will probably make it, but he's going to need help coming back. Won't do him any good if you are incapacitated too." CHAPTER ELEVEN Skinner went to the hospital the first chance he got, unfortunately it was about dinner time the next day. Silef was true to his word and gave him and the FBI enough information to get a court order to seize MedTek operations. As a result several key players were indicted. Unfortunately that Cigarette Smoking bastard wasn't one of them, and he was no where to be found. When Skinner walked in to Mulder's cubicle, Scully was sleeping lightly in a chair next to him, with her hand in his. Skinner stood a few moments looked over the situation and was about to leave. "Humph, sir," moaned Scully. "I didn't mean to wake you, Agent Scully." Skinner walked over to the other side of the bed where Scully was and sat down in the spare chair. "No that's okay. Did Selif come through?" "Yes, he rolled over on everybody. We made several indictments today. Have you been here the whole time?" "Yes sir." Dana stood up to work some of the kinks out of her back. "Why don't you go home, take a shower, change your clothes and get something to eat." "mmmumph, that sounds good, but someone has to be here. His fever broke during the night and when he is lucid," Scully let out a big yawn. "Someone will be here. You have an hour Agent Scully." Skinner said with an air of authority. He remembered his past partnerships and how many sleepless nights waiting for his partners to be okay. It must be different for a woman he theorized. Definitely different for these two. "Thank you sir," she smiled gratefully, "Mulder, I'll be right back." She patted him on his shoulder and left. When Scully returned she found Skinner in her chair doing paperwork, and Mulder was still out. Without even looking up for his work Skinner said, "You have 15 minutes still. Did you get something to eat?" "Yes I did. Did he wake up?" "No" Skinner started closing the files he was working on. "The seat is yours." Skinner got up and started to walk away. "Sir..did Selif mention who it was that died as Mulder?" "Yes he did. Apparently using genetics they were able to alter some guy. He didn't know the guy's name, he figured it was one of the project leader's goons. He said they were able to inject Mulder's DNA into this man and over a course of several months, change his appearance. Of course, the man looked like him before, so I don't know the validity of his claim or not. Apparently about two weeks ago Agent Mulder was abducted while coming home from the metro and replaced with the man who died." Scully looked horrified. Two weeks she worked with a complete stranger and was barely aware of it. "Thank you sir." "Well, try to get some sleep tonight." He took one final look at Mulder and walked out. CHAPTER TWELVE It took several days for the drugs to work through his system but Mulder finally woke up and was lucid. "Scully," Scully moved closer. She thought he was having one of his fits again. For the past two days he would wake up but think he was someplace else, or not recognize her, but would be calling her name. "I'm right here Mulder," as soon as she said it, she knew he was different. That he had finally woken up. "Scully," he smiled as he said it. It was over, he thought to himself, it's over and it's safe. "Shh, your ok, I'm right here. Welcome back." "Scully I thought ....I thought I never see you again." "I'm right here. We got you out of the place, by the way you owe your Lone Gunmen friends a big thank you and a dinner. Frohike has been worried sick about you." "How long have I been here?" He tried to look around, the drugs did have a few lingering side effects. "How come I can't move, Scully?!" "Sshh, it's ok. It's the drugs they were giving you. The doctor says that in a couple of days you'll be up and moving around." Mulder just sighed, this was a familiar situation for him. Him in a hospital bed, her at his side. "Why don't you get some rest, I'm right here," assured Scully. Mulder fell back to sleep. This time he didn't have any horrific nightmares or replay the abduction of his sister. He dreamed he was in a park eating lunch with his good pal Scully. end
