Authors note: This story contains subject matter that I thought would be interesting to explore. It by no means indicates that I think it should actually happen on the show or anything so please dont YELL at me! This is just a simple fantasy of my own that I thought I'd share. Please also keep in mind that Mulder won't remember a thing! But Scully will. And as always... ALONE by Michele Blankenship AKA Phenyx 11/23/94 Washington D.C. 11:00pm Saturday. Dana Scully sat on the couch in her livingroom with a mystery novel on her lap. She had been trying to read the book but couldn't concentrate on the plot. She kept looking at the clock on her mantel. She had just tried to call Mulder again. Either he wasn't answering his phone or he had left without turning on his machine. Regardless of the reason, Scully had let the phone ring twenty times before giving up, just as she had done every other time she had called him in the past eight hours. She had eventually fallen into a pattern. She called his apartment every 30 minutes and let the phone ring twenty times. Then she immediately repeated the effort with Mulder's cellular phone. She had finally decided that if she couldn't reach him by midnight, she would go out and look for him. Scully slammed her book down on the coffee table in frustration. As she walked toward the kitchen to pour herself another cup of tea, she thought to herself for the hundredth time *you never should have left him alone*.... ...." But I don't want to leave you alone right now, Mulder." Scully had insisted as she drove up to the curb in front of Mulder's apartment. "Let's have dinner. We can talk." Mulder closed his eyes briefly and sighed. "I don't want to talk, Scully. I can't." He looked at her with a blank, glassy-eyed stare that had nothing to do with the four rum and cokes he'd had on the return flight from Boston. "Well we won't talk then. We can go to your favorite park bench down at the Washington memorial. We'll watch the lights in the reflecting pool." Mulder shook his head. "Scully, " He paused, taking another deep breath. Dana knew that he was trying desperatly to control his tumultuous feelings. "I appreciate what your trying to do, so please don't take this the wrong way, but just leave me alone." He stressed each of the last three words with a brief pause between each. He then reached over the seat and grabbed his suitcase from the back. As he opened the door to leave, Dana put her hand gently on his arm to stop him. "It wasn't your fault Mulder. You were just a little boy." She said tenderly. He quickly looked away but Dana heard him swallow hard. "Yes, it is." His voice quavered. "It will always be MY fault." He stepped from the vehicle. "What are you going to do?"Scully asked with concern. " I think that I'll get drunk first, and worry about the rest later." He smiled sadly, carefully closed the car door and walked away. Dana sat in her car and watched him enter the apartment building as slow tears made their way down her cheeks. He was hurting dammit, and he wouldn't let her help. Mulder just had to beat himself up over it. Scully had known that identifying those remains in Boston as Samantha Mulder would tear him apart. At least now, he would have some of the answers he had been looking for all his life. When the light in Mulder's apartment clicked on, she finally put the car in gear and drove herself home. Scully poured steaming water into her mug and plucked a fresh teabag from the cabinet. She stared dreamily into the cup as she stirred in the sugar. She was beginning to think that Mulder may have been better off without knowing about Sam's death. When he had first told her that the skeletal remains of a child had been found in Massachusettes and his sister was one of the possible I.D.s, she had felt that Mulder was close to ending his obsession. However, when D.N.A. tests had finally proven that the victim was indeed Samantha Mulder, there were only more unanswered questions. What had happened? The skeleton revealed no clues as to the child's cause of death. Who had really killed her? When had she been killed? Why? These were answers that could never be found. Scully settled back onto the couch and picked up her book again. She would have to try and call Mulder again in a few more minutes. She glanced at the clock. It was 11:22. When the phone rang, she snatched up the reciever and asked. "Mulder?" "Hey Scully." She could hear a juke box in the background and alot of people talking. "Mulder? Are you alright? Where are you?" She asked. "Scully." His speech was slurred and choppy. He was SO drunk."You are the only person I can call in the middle of the night. Do you know that?" "Yes, Mulder. Where are you?" she repeated. He blathered on. "You're the only real friend I've got you know? I mean, I know a lot of people. A lot. But you are really the only person I can call in the middle of the night." Scully closed her eyes and nearly smiled. He was really smashed. "Mulder, where are you? I'll come and get you." "Yes! Yes, Scully come on over. I'll buy you a drink." He gave her the name of a bar near his apartment. "Right, Mulder. Just sit tight, I'll be there in fifteen minutes." Once she had gotten to the bar, it wasn't hard to find Mulder. He was sitting at the bar arguing with the bartender. As it turns out, the bartender had been the one to talk him into calling someone. Between herself and the kind barkeep, she had convinced Mulder that he had already bought her a drink even though he hadn't. She gratefully thanked the young man behind the counter and she manuevered Mulder out the door. By the time she got him back to his own apartment, Mulder could barely stand. She had to prop him against the wall while she opened the door. "You're really going to hate yourself in the morning, Mulder." she groaned as she helped him through the door. She practically dragged him across the room and plopped him down onto the couch. "Do you need help getting undressed?" she asked as he struggled with his coat. He couldn't seem to get his left hand out of his sleeve. "I'm not *that* drunk." he answered angrily. "Like Hell, you're not." she griped back. Scully pulled off Mulder's coat and tossed it across a nearby chair. She then carefully pulled his shirt over his head and tugged it off as well. Once he had laid back on the cushions, Scully removed his shoes and covered him with a blanket. She sat down next to him, watching him sleep for a moment. He was breathing deeply, although his face was flushed. She gently reached over to feel his forehead and check his temperature. To her surprise, Mulder reached up and took her hand. Without opening his eyes, he whispered, "Dana." "I'm still here." she said softly. She sat, immobile, while Mulder tenderly pressed the palm of her hand to his lips. He then kissed her inner forearm; a shiver trailed its way through her body. Mulder pulled himself to a sitting position and buried his face in the hair around her shoulders. Again, he whispered her name, "Dana." He tenderly kissed first her cheek, and then the corner of her mouth. When he kissed her lips, his touch was light and feathery. Dana felt her breath coming in quick little gasps. As the kiss deepened, Dana's arms crept up to encircle his neck. Her hand buried itself in his thick hair. He tasted of salt and peanuts. Mulder pulled her closer, she could feel the warmth of one hand pressed against her back. The other hand was tracing slow circles near her breast. She moulded herself against him as she returned his kiss passionately. *He won't remember a thing in the morning* she told herself. Some other part of her asked *Is that a good thing or a bad one?* She pulled back suddenly and blinked stupidly at him. He stared back at her with smoldering eyes. Scully then gently pushed him back to the cushions. "Go to sleep Mulder." she said tenderly, closing his eyes for him with a gentle touch. "Don't leave me alone." he whispered. "You're never alone, Mulder." She trailed her hand down his chest to the blanket which she then pulled up around him. "I'm never more than a phone call away." She sat there for several minutes, watching him as he drifted into unconsciousness. When she was sure that he was truly asleep, she turned out the lights and left. Only when she had gotten into the car did she suddenly realize what had nearly happened. She sat in the car shaking violently. She leaned her forehead against the steering wheel and tried to calm herself. She had just learned more about herself than she liked to admit. Scully trembled as she thought of Mulder's kisses and what they nearly led to. If she hadn't ended the kiss when she had, she was sure that they would have continued toward the obvious conclusion. The worst part was, she wasn't convinced that she had made the right choice. Dana Scully blinked back a tear, started her car and began the long trip home to bed....alone. the end
